Krystal Shannan's Stop on Marie Astor's Excerpt Tour - On the Rim of Love

Please help me welcome Marie Astor to the blog today! I'm one of her stops on an exciting excerpt tour!

On the Rim of Love
by Marie Astor

~~~~~~~~~~~~
Maggie Robin has been dating the irresistibly good-looking, successful Jeffrey Preston for two years. But when Jeffrey proposes marriage a week after Maggie’s college graduation, she is no longer sure if she wants to marry a workaholic TV producer.
Maggie’s doubts culminate when during a ski trip to British Columbia, she meets Taylor Denton, a handsome, free-spirited big mountain skier who is the complete opposite of Jeffrey. It does not take Maggie long to realize that she has fallen in love with Taylor and she decides to break off her engagement with Jeffrey. But just when she thinks she has found the love of her life, an ill-fated misunderstanding tears Maggie and Taylor apart.
A week later, Maggie is told that Taylor has died in a tragic ski accident; yet, her heart refuses to believe in Taylor’s death. When Maggie returns to Taylor’s native town, she learns that Taylor is indeed alive, but has been seriously injured. Resolved to bring her lover back to life Maggie stands by Taylor’s side, convincing him to embrace life again.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Taylor glanced at his watch – the day sure seemed to drag: as if the pressure of guiding a group of fairly inexperienced skiers were not enough, he had had to contend with their egos as well. Correction, there was only one ego to contend with: Jeffrey’s, and, well, not all the skiers in the group were inexperienced. Maggie certainly knew what she was doing, and, despite his cavalier ways, so did Jeffrey – at least until he did something reckless, which Taylor hoped would not happen on his watch. As for Charlie and Bethany, both were average skiers who could manage moderate terrain, but neither of them had the skill for advanced inclines, which of course made the situation all the more cumbersome since Jeffrey kept insisting on switching to tougher terrain.
Well, the day was almost over – it was already two o’clock and Taylor had made it clear that they would call it a day at three. There was just about enough time left for two more runs, and then he would be home free. But it was too soon to think about that yet – first, he had to get the group back to the ski base safe and sound. And in order to do that he had to stop thinking about Maggie – something he had promised himself to do this morning, but was still unable to accomplish. Of course the fact that every time the two of them exchanged a word, he froze like some imbecile, did not help matters either. The fact of the matter was that he simply could not remember the last time he had been so intrigued by a girl. There was a lot more to Maggie than her good looks: not only did she know how to ski, she also had a gift for photography, which, of course, made him wonder what she was doing sticking around a man like Jeffrey, a man who, from what Taylor could tell, was taking her for granted.
It had been a while since Taylor had a steady girlfriend. Actually, come to think of it, Gina, his high school sweetheart, was the last girl he dated for more than a year - that relationship ended when Taylor made the decision to leave New York for Eagleville, right after high school. His good looks attracted plenty of attention from the opposite sex, and Taylor never had a shortage of dates; however, that had been the extent of his relationships: a series of dates. He was twenty-three now and was starting to get tired of meaningless flings. Over the past four years he had briefly dated a string of pretty girls from out of town, but in the end, he would inevitably end up unattached. He was by no means a womanizer and valued loyalty above all; in fact, it was the lack of loyalty in these fleeting encounters that prompted the breakups. Too often he found himself a subject of a stereotype, discovering that the girls he dated were only interested in him because of his skiing. Superficially labeling him as reckless and a daredevil, they had no interest in getting to know him as a person, thinking of him as someone who was great to have a fling with, but nothing serious. While this arrangement was mildly disappointing, for the time being, it suited Taylor just fine, as he enjoyed it for the thrills it had to offer.

Dracula’s Desire
By Linda Mercury

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Revealing herself as the Dracula of legend, much less a woman, should have been Valerie Tate’s greatest challenge. But with her longing for blood quenched by the one man she couldn’t resist, Valerie now finds herself in an impossible circumstance…
Out Of The Shadows…
It’s a fact that vampires do not get pregnant. But Valerie is definitely pregnant. Worse, six months ago her lover, Lance Soleil, abandoned her. Determined to find answers, Valerie goes on a quest—one that leads her to Lance’s childhood friend, John Janté, a man with whom she shares a strong bond—and an intense lust. But when John is kidnapped, Valerie’s attempt to rescue him uncovers more than she bargained for…
Into The Fire…
Scouring parallel realms and pocket dimensions, Valerie soon finds that Lance has regained Paradise as Angel of the Lost…John is hostage in a bizarre world that resembles Victorian London…and most shocking of all, Valerie’s greatest love may be within her reach once more. For the soul of Dracula’s dead wife, Ilona, is trapped within John’s captor, a mad woman robbed of her humanity and manipulated by a conspiracy of Fallen Angels. Now, torn between past and present loves, Valerie must contend with emotions that threaten to break her. And in a desperate show-down, the reunited triad of a vampire, an angel, and a human, must face their deepest fears—with the future of an unborn angel-to-be in the balance…
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

On a wild, evil night in 1431 AD, Vlad II Dracul’s second son was born. The parents named their child Vlad III, after his father. This child grew up to become one of the most famous torturers in the world: Vlad the Impaler, Vlad Tepes, best known as Dracula. The stories of his atrocities grew even greater when he refused death and became the legendary vampire.
     Throughout the centuries, the younger Vlad allied himself with leaders who promised an orderly, centralized government that would control an unruly, chaotic Europe. His goal came to the end when he died in Berlin, another dupe used by Hitler to achieve his crazed goals.
     The problem with once-upon-a-time stories? They get the important things wrong.

Whipple's touch upon her caused her no pain.

But Whipple was an old man, ancient in these times. According to his own recollection, he would celebrate his seventieth birthday when the snow fell again.

The man on her bed, in contrast to Whipple, was young and handsome, broad of chest, threatening. He did not belong here with her. Whipple was right to fear for her safety. This stranger was not only very handsome but virile, well-muscled, obviously powerful. His purpose here was unknown.

"Who are you?" she whispered to no one. “And why did someone want to kill you?”

She watched the man, continuing her study of him. An irregularity of feature in his face kept him from perfection. His forehead was broad, fine lines feathering from eyes set well apart and thickly lashed. His cheekbones were high and well defined above black beard stubble, his nose straight, his jaw fully reflecting a persistent nature.

"Why have you come here? And why does it seem as if I've known you before?"

She wondered about the color of his eyes. Beneath the blood, his hair was thick, straight as an arrow, and the color of a raven's wing. His hair tempted her to run her fingers through it, test its texture.

He is a man of God, she chided herself.

Yet that simple reminder did not ease her fears nor the temptations besieging her.

Whipple's hacking cough alarmed her again, bringing her back to the situation at hand. But then he cleared his throat and spoke more roughly than usual. "This mon is no' a priest."

Her heart stammered beneath her breast even while she agreed wholeheartedly with Whipple. "Do you think there is treachery here? Perhaps 'tis why he pretends to be something he is not."

"Aye, deceit and lies abound here this night."
