Krystal Shannan Features - RT Wolfe

Welcome RT Wolfe back to the blog! So glad to have you back!

Tell us a little about yourself.
Thank you, Krystal. I’m thrilled to be back on your beautiful blog. You’ve done an amazing job with it! I am the author of the Black Creek Series set in beautiful upstate New York. I enjoy creating diverse characters and twining them together in the midst of an intelligent mystery and a heart encompassing romance.
It’s not uncommon to find dark chocolate squares in my candy dish, my Golden Retriever at my feet and a few caterpillars spinning their cocoons in their terrariums on my counters. I love my family, gardening, eagle-watching and can occasionally be found viewing a flyover of migrating Whooping cranes.

Did you always want to be an author?
I’ll always say that writing found me. I did not go looking for it. I’m not sure what made me type out the first few lines of Black Creek Burning. It wasn’t my style. Two lines turned into two pages that turned into two hundred pages and more. It was like crack cocaine and I’m never going back. The process, the research, the editing, the hours in one spot (7,500 words in one seven-hour sitting at Panera is my record), I completely love it all. The book has earned a 4.8 star average on Amazon and has been featured on the USA Today Happy Ever After blog. I’m so incredibly blessed.

What made you choose to write romance?
There are other genres? LOL

What is your favorite part of being a writer/author?
Ugh. That’s a hard one. My favorite? I would say it is when a reader messages me to tell me they are holding their eyelids up with toothpicks because they couldn’t put down my book. So kind!

Tell us a little about your book. What inspired you to write it?
Flying in Shadows is Book 2 in the Black Creek Series. Book 1 is more of a prequel to books 2 and 3.
Andrew Reed grew up with an instinctual need to keep an eye on his best friend. Not that Rose couldn’t take care of herself. Wild and sassy, she could hold her own in a fight, yet turn on a dime to volunteer at the local zoo or animal shelter. It wasn’t until later in life when Andy discovered his instincts were well founded.
Rosemarie Piper spent much of her life hidden from a brutal past she didn’t know she had. As the most upcoming conservation biologist in the Northeast, Rose works to find common ground with her passion to preserve nature’s creatures and the fact that the love of her life turned into a builder and land developer.
Little do either of them know their differences in life choices won’t be the only thing that works to keep them apart. When the violence from Rose’s past discovers her existence, she and Andy fight not only to keep their love together but to keep Rose alive.

Here is an excerpt…

Walking in the dark, Andy readjusted his tackle box. Moonlight shone on the dark ripples creeping down Black Creek. He spotted a raccoon as he crossed the bridge. Startled, the animal hissed at him. Andy stomped his foot and hissed back; he was in no mood for it.
In his peripheral vision, he saw movement Larger movement. A man? The shape disappeared as quickly as Andy imagined it. When you let yourself get this worked up, you start seeing things, he chided himself.
He needed Rose.
She would calm him down and lighten his mood, help him feel normal again. He looked at his watch and winced. What were friends for if you couldn't count on them to be there? Even at this time of night. Or morning.
* * *
Rose slept soundly in her twin bed dreaming of her favorite spot at the zoo. In the small rain forest building, she allowed a newly emerged monarch butterfly to dry its wings on her apron while sharing facts about the insect to one of two visiting young boys. The other threw pebbles into the nearby wishing pond. The sound of the small rocks plunked as they hit the stone wall before dropping into the water.
Oh, crap. She woke and sat up straight. The plunking noise came from outside, not in her head.
Heart in her throat, she ripped off her blankets and hustled across the hard floor to the window. It was still pitch-black out.
Grabbing the flashlight she always kept on the windowsill, Rose paused for moment. She shook her head assuring herself it was Andy and lifted the window. She found him with the beam as she hissed loudly, “I thought you didn’t get home until tomorrow.”
"It is tomorrow." He held up fishing poles and tackle box.
"It's not tomorrow until the sun comes up." Tugging on a pair of jeans, Rose smiled wildly to herself. This reaction she had to Andy Reed had to stop. It was not healthy.
"I've got the worms." he called. "Get down here."

Do you plot and outline or do you just write?  Plotter or Pantser?
I try to be a plotter. I am a plotter in other areas of my life. But the characters are constantly pulling me away and making me re-outline. I don’t mind.

Can you tell us about the process of getting your first book published?
After many queries and submissions, I was offered a contract by a smaller publishing company. That didn’t work out and I was able to get my rights back (that actually hardly ever happens). I am now with ePublishing Works and loving the intelligent, data-driven work and marketing through this company.

What advice would you give new authors?
In the words of my aspiring author friend, Kate Bateman, “Finish the damn book.” LOL The biggest obstacle I see in new authors is the guts to finish. I won’t say it’s easy, but it’s worth it!

I absolutely agree!

What have you learned about the business?
Such a thought-provoking question. I’ve learned it mostly not true. What I mean is I know of quality self-published author works and truly awful published novels. The traditional standards of the publishing world are IMO still heavy-laden on authors. I see unconventional publishing companies such as Entangled and ePublishing Works who are proving to be highly successful and author-friendly but are looked down upon because … well … they are unconventional. Interesting.

The square pegs in a round world! LOL!

Do you have another book in the works?
I do, Krystal. Thank you for asking. Book 3 in the Black Creek Series is tentatively set to be released April 1st. I had barely gotten it to my editor before three more series were buzzing holes in my head. Decisions.

What do you like to do in your free time, besides read and write of course?
I have three boys who are swimmers. I spend many nights and weekends traveling around the Midwest attending their meets. I can often be found in bleachers with my laptop in my lap. I love working my golden retriever, could spend days upon days in my gardens and love learning about nature.

Where do you dream of going on vacation?
Right now, I need to get to a beach on the east coast. One of the series buzzing those holes in my head features a conservation biologist who specializes in the protection of sea turtles and a rogue deep sea treasure hunter. Fun.

Boxers or Briefs?
Boxer-briefs. Sorry, I know that cheating

Cookies or cake?
Completely cookies. I gave up sweets for Lent. Trying not to think about it!

Pizza or hamburger?
Pizza with the works! This is not a sweet. Whoop!

Beer, Wine, or mixed drink?
Budweiser. Bottle. Not Bud Light. Red wine when I’m being healthy.

(Hero/Heroine Character Questions)
What were your first impressions of each other?
Andy: Rose was five-years old, bossy, rude and cussed like a sailor!
Rose: Andy was a pansy. I taught him better.
What’s your favorite characteristic of each other?
Andy: Rose is a survivor. But she shares her nature of survival with those less able to fight for themselves, mostly the endangered animals she adores.
Rose: Andy can talk his way in and out of just about any situation. I wish I had that skill. I guess Andy has stepped in for me with his thousand watt smile and quick tongue, like with Whooping crane reserve land and that time in grade school when I got in the ‘spat’ with the boys on the playground? Yeah, he’s handy alright.
What are your plans for the near future?
Andy: Win the girl and keep her alive!
Rose: I’m too busy to think about anything but my work. Eagle bandings, presentations, protests, the care of injured animals. I don’t have to time to plan for anything, especially my broken heart.

What's your favorite ESP? Author Linda Andrews

Please help me welcome Linda Andrews to the blog today!

I love the paranormal genre. Anything is possible. But my favorite types of stories are those that involve ESP, or extrasensory perception. Maybe it's not as good as flying or immortality for some. For me though, this  extra sense takes an ordinary human and puts them in jeopardy. Not just from their opponent, but has the potential to make them an outcast from the human family.

Life is hard enough without wearing the freak cap at the party.

Here are the more popular kind of ESP:

Telepathy--reading someones thoughts. While this might seem like a fun superpower, society functions due to a delicate balance between truth and subterfuge. Think about it. You know the phrase little white lies is around for a reason. And for the record, not telling someone is a lie of omission. Besides, I scare enough people as it is. If they knew what I was thinking, they'd run screaming away in terror.

Precognition: seeing future events. Now this one is really cool. Anyone with this power would surely be a wall street bazzillionaire by now. But with the good comes the bad--do you really want to know when your friend is going to get sick and die and not be able to do anything about it?

Psychometry: gaining information about someone by touching them or something they've possessed. Now this one I like. Plus, you can control it by wearing gloves. Of course as this is similar to telepathy you run into the same hazards.

Clairvoyance: seeing events occurring at another location. This is my favorite kind of ESP for suspense/mystery novels, especially when it makes the heroine a target for the killer. But like the others, these insights would probably occur at very inconvenient times and cause all sorts of complications.

Sensitive/Medium/Psychic--these people can see and talk to the dead. By far my favorite paranormal novels involve dead people (I'm sure most would see that as a cry for help). I love the idea of ghosts, of life after death and sticking around to look after those we left behind.

Alas, I don't have any of these abilities. In fact I usually tell my family that if they want to get my attention while I'm writing, they might want to rent space on a billboard and get bright neon arrows to point at it. While my loving family might think me oblivious, I've had psychometry and psychic abilities through my characters.

If you had to pick one ESP, what would it be?

Please check out Linda's new release BRIANNA!

Love, lies, and an ancient Egyptian curse. Brianna Grey holds the key to mankind's destruction and someone is willing to kill for it. Having spent most of her life dying, one man's kiss has resurrected her desire to live. For US Treasury Agent, Duncan Stuart, love means death. He works alone, lives alone and plans to die alone until he meets Brianna again. Under the harsh Egyptian sun, Duncan will break all his rules to save her but will it be enough to overcome the secrets that could get them both killed?

Excerpt:
“Brianna, can ye hear me?” Panic fed the primal rage bucking through Duncan. He bound the fury. A treasury agent had nerves of tempered steel, control of iron. A white lock rested on her pale cheek. Peppermint-scented breath slipped past pink lips. She was fine. She had fainted, nothing more. Nothing more.
Yet she had not wakened.
“I had thought she would be accustomed to violence, especially after the tales she told of Arizona.” Miss Phillips’s whine sliced through his musings.
A man had been murdered, poisoned in front of a roomful of wealthy, influential witnesses. August would have been the likely suspect—it was his valet, after all. Except, he couldn’t have known his servant would be in the room, let alone would drink from the glass. So who was the intended victim?
He laid Brianna on the plush carpet and knelt beside her. He brushed her bangs out of her eye, sweeping aside the feather headdress.
And who was the poisoner?
He might have spied something if he hadn’t dallied over his evening dress, and what had his delay accomplished? Not a bluidy thing. His hair still stuck up a little in front. As for the noose around his neck, he could feel the ends brushing his jaw.
“Damn it, Brianna, wake up!”
“Señor Stuart?” Esmé pried apart the Van Sargents. Worry pinched her features, increased the pitch of her voice. Two men in ship’s uniform squeezed through behind her, parting the assembled crowd. An elderly man in a somber suit appeared and set a black bag on the table.
Ignoring the newcomers, Duncan leaned close to Esmé’s ear. “Has Brianna eaten anything tonight?”
Shock flashed in her brown eyes. Her gaze flicked to the corpse before meeting his.
“No, señor. The dinner, it has not been served.”
He nodded. Relief flooded him.
“I believe she has fainted.”
“There are smelling salts in our room.”
“Get them.”
“Are you a doctor, sir?” Curry and garlic permeated the air as the elderly man who’d arrived with the ship’s crew creaked to a stop beside Duncan. He leaned over Brianna with his ear near her mouth. “Peppermint,” he whispered, straightened then peeled the glove off her left hand. His index finger settled comfortably against the inside of her wrist. “An admirable heartbeat.”
“I’m nae a doctor.”
“Hmm, yet your prognosis is undoubtedly correct.” The man peered at Duncan over the gold rims of his spectacles. “The ladies do like to lace tightly, don’t they?” His Adam’s apple bobbed in the wattles of his throat. “Smelling salts should set Miss to rights. You’ve sent the companion to fetch them, hmm? ”
“That won’t be necessary.” Sir Reginald stepped forward. “Mrs. Van Sargent, the salts, if you please.”
Duncan grabbed the small glass bottle—he didn’t trust the missionary any more than he did the others. Glass scraped glass as he plucked the stopper free. Ammonia invaded his nose, stripped the moisture from the back of his throat. Definitely smelling salts. He shoved them under Brianna’s nose.
She winced, turned her head and coughed. Her eyes flickered open.
“Duncan. Wh-what happened?”
“You fainted.”
“You are very much mistaken.” She shoved herself into a sitting position, tucked a stray lock of hair behind her ear and straightened her bodice. “A Grey does not faint.”
“It’s alright, dear.” Mrs. Van Sargent tucked the bottle back in her purse. “I daresay, if Mr. Stuart hadn’t caught you you would have crashed right into the table.”
Movement caught his eye. At the doctor’s nod, the burly crewmen lifted the body. Duncan shifted his weight to block Brianna’s view. Her lips parted; her eyes grew round. He had acted too late. She had seen the corpse.
“That man.” She pointed to the blanket-draped body with her bare hand. “He...”
“He’s dead, dear.”
“Choked to death,” Van Sargent added with relish.
“Such a terrible tragedy,” said Miss Phillips, dabbing her dry eyes.
“Sir Reginald doesn’t think it will prolong our stay aboard the <i>Osiris.”
Duncan’s skin crawled as Mrs. Van Sargent beamed down at them like a goddess spreading her benevolence.
“But he—“ Brianna’s nails dug into Duncan’s arm.
”Choked to death.” He kept his voice firm, his tone final. Brianna had been around death most of her life, was intimately acquainted with most of its faces. He wouldn’t allow her knowledge to get her killed.

Guest Blogger ~ Nona Raines

Pleased to Welcome Nona Raines to the blog today to tell us about her new release UNCOLLARED.

Thanks so much for letting me be here today. I'm very proud to announce that my novel "Uncollared" was released on August 7.  It's a bit of a departure for me in that it's my first erotic romance that contains BDSM elements.
The heroine of "Uncollared" is Mia Manetti. When the story opens, she's heartbroken to learn that her current Dom is severing their relationship.  What she doesn't know is that another man already has his eye on her.
Chess Ryan is a sexual Dominant who's been attracted to Mia for some time. Now that she's free, he wants her for himself. But of course, it's not that simple.  Mia's still stung by rejection and Chess has secrets that could destroy any chance he has with her.
Mia seems a bit of an underdog from the start, as she's trying to recover from hurt feelings and shattered pride. But who among us can't identify with that? Most of us have been hurt and rejected at some point in our lives. I have to admit, I've always been more inclined to side with a character who starts from a "one down" position.
Chess on the other hand, seems to have the world by the tail. He's handsome, wealthy and successful. How could a man like that have any problems? Well, appearances are sometimes deceiving.
Both characters have to do some serious soul-searching before they can begin to move beyond the rigid roles of Dom and sub. But can their relationship survive when reach out to each other as lovers?
The tagline on my website is "Edgy ~ Emotional ~ Erotic" and I've tried to hit the high notes in this book. I hope readers will think so, too.
Blurb:
Submissive Mia Manetti is devastated when her first Master uncollars her just as she was hoping for a permanent relationship with him. Trying to move on, she agrees to sub for a powerful and sexy new Dom.
Chess Ryan has wanted Mia from the first moment he saw her at Club Restraint, but it was always "hands off" because she belonged to his friend Philip. Now, thanks to that friend's maneuvers, Mia is finally his. But only for a little while.
Mia finds it increasingly difficult to keep her feelings in check as she experiences erotic delights with Master Chess, sensual and sexual fantasies that she's never known before. Is she setting herself up for another heart ache?
Guilt, secrets and misplaced pride all keep Chess and Mia from being completely honest with each other. As they connect sexually and emotionally, they realize their relationship has grown too serious to be called "play". How far are they willing to go as Master and slave?

Excerpt:
As she turned toward the lobby she bumped, almost literally, into Chess Ryan. He appeared suddenly, as if he’d been waiting right outside the ladies’ lounge.
“Oh!” She stepped backward in surprise, wobbling on her high heels. Chess steadied her, his hands warm on her bare arms, his gray eyes fixed on her face.
“I didn’t, uh, didn’t expect you—”
“Have you been crying?” His voice was rough. He sounded angry.
“I’m not feeling well,” she murmured, looking away.
His fingers flexed briefly on her skin and then fell away as he withdrew. “Let me take you back to your table.”
“No!” Mia cried, panic-stricken. His eyebrows flew up, and she immediately calmed herself. “I mean, no, thank you. I’m going home now.”
His brow lowered, and his gaze drifted to her bare throat. Something flashed in his eyes. She was shaken, as though he’d seen her nude.
Though one of the most respected Doms at Restraint and one of the most popular, he had never done more with Mia than exchange a few pleasantries. Master Philip wasn’t into sharing, and neither was she.
But now he said, “I’ll take you home.”
“No…your friends…”
“They’re not really friends. Business acquaintances, more like. I’ll make my excuses.” Before Mia could even think what to say next, he quickly took charge. “Wait for me right here. We’ll leave in a moment.”
She could have easily slipped away while he said good night to his dinner companions, but for some reason Mia waited, just as Chess told her. She had no idea why. Was it easier to simply let someone else take charge? Or perhaps Chess’s attention soothed the hurt of Philip’s rejection?
A dull ache throbbed behind Mia’s left eye. She was almost grateful for the distraction it provided from the pain in her soul.
Chess appeared again, his expression still taut with simmering anger.
“Your friends weren’t upset?” she asked.
He shrugged as if it made no difference. “They’re fine.” He paused a moment. “I spoke to Philip.”
Her steps faltered. “You didn’t—”
“I only told him I’m taking you home. He was fine with it.”
Fine with it. Another hurt, another small sign that Philip no longer wanted her.
In spite of Chess’s abrupt manner, he was most gentle as he took her by the arm. “Come, Mia. We’re leaving.”

AFTER TELLING HIM her address, Mia had nothing to say on the drive home, and Chess didn’t push. Her bare throat and stricken expression told him all he needed to know. He kept a tight rein on his own anger so as not to upset her further, but he couldn’t help wondering what the hell was wrong with Philip.
How could he just let Mia go with no explanation?
Chess remembered the startling sting of jealousy he felt when he first saw them together at Restraint. That wasn’t like him at all. Mia was appealing, sure, and if she’d been available, he’d have enjoyed playing with her. But he’d played with plenty of willing subs, some of them real knockouts. So why did Mia get him going?
He thought of the way she looked at Philip as if the sun rose and set on him. Could it be that he, Chess Ryan, wanted a woman to gaze on him with that kind of admiration and love? As if he were Albert Einstein, Mahatma Gandhi, and George Clooney rolled into one. But she’d always been off-limits because she belonged to Philip.
She’s not off-limits now. Chess frowned, his hands tightening on the steering wheel as he pushed the thought aside. Mia was in a bad place emotionally. He wouldn’t take advantage of her vulnerability by putting the moves on her.
“Here it is.” Mia’s voice was low as she pointed out the multiunit building where she lived. He pulled into the lot and accompanied her inside. Without speaking, they climbed to the second floor and stopped in front of Mia’s door.
“Thank you,” she murmured as she unlocked the door.
Before she crossed the threshold, he spoke. “Mia.”
When she turned toward him, he told her, “Look at me.”
She lifted her beautiful brown eyes to meet his gaze, and he took her hands in his. “You will have another Master, Mia. And when he finds you, I hope he realizes what a lucky man he is.”
As she stared at him, he felt as though he could look into her eyes forever. A shiver went through her and passed to him before they pulled away simultaneously. She fumbled with her keys and finally managed to slip them back into her purse. “Thank you,” she repeated, stepping quickly inside and closing the door quietly but firmly.
As though she wanted to escape him.

Nona Raines became hooked on romances when she first picked up "The Flame and the Flower" by Kathleen Woodiwiss (and she's not telling how long ago that was). Romances may have changed since then, but her love for a good love story has not. She's been writing off and on for years, but it was only when she joined the Central New York Romance Writers Association that she finally gained the support and confidence she needed to complete a manuscript.

Nona lives in upstate New York with her many pets and is currently working on her next novel. A former librarian, she enjoys reading books of all genres and discussing them with others. She is thrilled to finally be able to call herself an author and looks forward to hearing from readers.

Harley DeLuca ~ Writing BDSM

Pleased to have Harley DeLuca on the blog today with her insights into writing about BDSM.

Sex is a very beautiful affair between two people, even when it becomes mundane, sex is still very pleasurable. Now when you add in some BDSM and or “spice” it can become more than beautiful, it can turn into an explosion of your very own special Fourth of July.  Most people who I have talked to either asked or commented on why I have chosen to write a story based off of BDSM. My usual response is “why not?” There is a preconceived notion that BDSM is hardcore and that most of the “Dom’s” are egotistical men with power issues. Well not necessarily. There are also women in this “lifestyle” (and yes I use the term lifestyle loosely) that also have the same “I need to control every situation” mindset. I am here to tell you that most BDSM and the people who choose to participate in it are very sound in mind and body and do not use their “power” to actually control their partners.

In my story Mistress of Passion there are power struggles, but the struggles come from within the characters themselves. Rachel and Dominic use BDSM as a way to relieve and remove certain parts of their life that they either had no control over or refuse to let that control take their life over.  When I first started writing Mistress of Passion, I thought to myself “oh this is easy to write, no biggie.” Ha! I was oh so ever wrong. Though I did hold a small amount of knowledge about BDSM, I needed to know more. Even though BDSM is a physical act there are psychological reasons as to why BDSM is used. So with that theory in mind I looked at how my characters would use BDSM and the why of it.

In Rachel’s case she used the “pain” from her “tools” to expel her painful past. Rachel would frequently use her riding crop on herself (as well as other items) to remind her of not only the pain she felt enduring the torture of her past, but to also revel in the fact that now she, and she alone, had total control of her future. Never had it crossed her mind that she would actually be helping others reclaim their futures or help aid them in their exploration of certain vices many deem to be taboo.

Dominic on the other hand didn’t have a troubled past. No, it was the life he currently lived that was a huge detriment to his life now. Of course all of his “pain” was self-induced. Being a big shot lawyer brought on a whole new world of vices that could help remove himself from his own reality. Unjust actions that were used to help aid his clients were always paid with more than just money. Goodbye world of misery and heartache, hello world of numb, out of control substance abuse.

As there are no real right or wrong ways to write BDSM, there are however some “guidelines”, if you will, that I personally think everyone who writes in the BDSM genre should follow.  But most importantly there is mounds of research (if you don’t already participate in BDSM) that should be done before you just go off writing about something you do not fully understand. There are so many books that have BDSM qualities and are considered part of the BDSM genre. But to me personally they lack the emotion behind why BDSM is being used. The BDSM “craze” that is happening now in the literary world, I couldn’t be more than happy for. Not only does it help in making BDSM seem not so forbidden, it also helps people who never really understood why someone would use this form of “pain” to gain pleasure.

Thank you so much for being my guest today. It's nice to see authors really taking the time to research a genre that can be very sorely abused if not understood.

MISTRESS OF PASSION
Blurb:
In the realm of all things sexual, Rachel used her sexuality as a form of escape. She desperately tried to avoid her past to manipulate her future by delving into the dark recesses of all things kinky. With a fearful past, she turned her hurt, rage, confusion and unexplained passion into nothing but pure pleasure.  Being a Mistress came naturally for Rachel, she was good at being a Dom. Only one challenge stood in her way, would she able to accept her life the way it was now or was she secretly yearning for something more?

Dominic was your all around “grade-A” male. Had the job, the money, the title, but didn’t have the will to live, not until he walked into London Leather. Like most of the rich and famous he needed the escape of normality, needed to be reminded of who he was when he was stripped of everything. He had been stripped before but not like this. Would he be able to withstand all he was about to receive or would he have to resort back to his old ways and just pray for death?

About the Author:
With so many books to read and so many stories to write there is hardly enough time in the day to make up the perfect balance to get both accomplished! As she finished her first story for Hot Ink Press she felt victorious. She has been writing for fun-and for expression, for the past couple of years, but to now finally have something that will be produced for the whole world to read and enjoy is more than a goal she had set for herself-it was a MAJOR accomplishment.

Even though "life" had gotten in the way of her writing, she has recently come back to it so she can give her fans an excitement of pleasure they just can't put down. Now residing in Kansas City, she strives to top herself with each story she writes. Practice makes perfect is one of her mottos and one that she values only to make her next story better than the last.
