Krystal Shannan - WIP - Pride Rules #39 #sixsunday #amwriting

Thanks for dropping by today for a sneak peek at two of my favorite characters, Eshe and Darren.

His lips sought her clit and he sucked hard.
Eshe’s muscles contracted and she arched completely off the bed. A throaty scream tore from her throat. Her vision blurred. His mouth never relented. Wave after electric wave rippled through her.

And that's all you get.....(hehehehe, come back next week for more)

Krystal Shannan Features - A Second Chance At Forever - J.M. Stewart - Give@way!

Please help me welcome J.M. Stewart to the blog today!

Tell us a little about yourself.

I write what I likes to call sweet and spicy contemporary romance. The stories have a sweet feel to them, they’re usually family oriented, but also passionate. I’m a stay-at-home mom by trade, married to my own hero for over sixteen years now. We live in the Great Northwest with our two boys and two very spoiled puppies.

Did you always want to be an author? What made you choose to write romance?

I haven’t always wanted to be a writer, no. I’ve been reading romances for as long as I can remember. I picked them up somewhere around high school. I used to read strictly historical, believe it or not. One day, about eleven years ago, I had this dream. It stuck me with, and it intrigued me. The images told me a story I absolutely had to write down. In the process of doing so, I found a love for telling the story.

What is your favorite part of being a writer/author?

Telling the stories. I adore discovering the characters and their stories. I get very into the telling of it. It becomes almost an obsession and the characters become like friends to me.

Tell us a little about your book.

Angela Lewis is newly divorced. She’s always been the geeky girl. Smart, unpopular. After her husband leaves her for a younger woman, Angela gets a job as a stripper on the Las Vegas Strip as a means of picking her self-esteem up off the floor. In the club, Angela gets to be the sexy vixen she always wanted to be.  This is where she runs into her childhood crush. They haven’t seen each other in years and he doesn’t recognize her. When he takes an interest in her alter ego, Angela can’t resist. She only wants one night to live in the fantasy.

Alex McKinley’s life has been shattered by tragedy. His wife and four year old daughter were killed in a car accident. He’s in Vegas with coworkers, trying to pick up the pieces of his life and move on. A no strings attached, weekend fling with Candy is exactly what he needs. Little does he know that Candy is actually his best friend’s kid sister. Little Angie’s all grown up and driving him crazy.

It’s only supposed to be a weekend fling. Until Angela discovers she’s pregnant. Alex knows he’ll stand by her, but the more time he spends with her, the more Alex finds himself falling for the woman she’s become. She makes him want to live again. The question is, can he convince her to take a chance on him?

What inspired me to write it?

I happened across a snippet someone had posted somewhere on the net. Sadly, I forgot where, but it was from the viewpoint of a female character who worked as a stripper. I’d never seen that done before in a romance, so I immediately thought to myself, “What kind of romance novel heroine works in a strip club in Vegas?” Angela stepped out and introduced herself to me.

When I got to thinking about who the hero of the story would be, Alex introduced himself to me in the pages of another book. I was re-reading Diana Gabaldon’s Voyager, I believe it was. The hero in that novel uses an alias, the first name of which is Alex.

Their story unfolded from there.

Excerpt:

He lay on his back a few minutes later, Angela gathered against his side, her head on his shoulder. Her soft cry echoed across the recesses of his memory. The name she’d called him stood out in his mind.

His eyes popped open. She hadn’t called him Alex. She’d called him A.J. Nobody had called him that since he’d graduated high school. He’d been going by Alex since college. In fact, only a certain few people had ever called him that.

Heart beating an erratic pace, his mind filled with her bright blue eyes, and the last time he’d seen eyes like those. He jerked his gaze to the top of her head, hooked his fingers beneath her chin and tilted it up, desperate to see her face.

The memory rose unbidden in his mind. A fifteen-year- old girl standing on the porch of her mother’s house, looking up at him with the exact eyes staring back at him now. She had the same button nose, the same full lips… He’d noticed the similarities more than once, but had dismissed them….

Then his mind flashed on the night before, the name she’d given him as they’d stood beside her car in the parking lot of the dance club.

“My name is Angela.”

The way she’d looked at him, as if she’d expected him to have something to say about it.

Oh hell… “That Angela?”

Do you plot and outline or do you just write?  Plotter or Pantser?
I do a bit of both. I need to know the basic premise, a bit about the characters, specially their goals and conflicts, and a general idea of the plot, of where I’m going. I don’t actually write anything down though in outline format or anything. I just start writing.

Can you tell us about the process of getting your first book published?

My first book, Staking His Claim, was published two years ago. I’ve since gotten the rights back on the book and am in the process of revising it, with plans to resubmit it and the sequel again the future (mentioning that in case anybody goes looking for it and doesn’t find it. lol). But… I originally wrote the book over 8 years ago now. I sent it off to Harlequin, got a revision request for it, but unfortunately the book ultimately got rejected. It just didn’t meet their needs.

Not too long after that, I stopped writing, for a period about six years. I had some personal stuff crop up. When I picked up writing again, this book was the one I picked up. So, I sent it through a critique partner, revised the book and did some research on publishers. I got lucky, during my hiatus, a lot of small presses popped up, so I found one I liked, and flung it out there again. I honestly expected another rejection, but a month later, I got an email that said, “Congratulations!”

What advice would you give new authors?  What have you learned about the business?

Social media and self-promotion is important. You want to create a name for yourself, your own brand, get people interested in you. But don’t forget that without those books, there’s nothing to sell. This is one I’m still learning. Self promotion is a big job and if you let it, it can take up all your time. But don’t forget to keep writing, to write that next book, too. In fact, these days, I tend to put my writing slightly above the promotion. I do promotion the most on days when I’m feeling less than inspired.

Also, don’t shove your product down other people’s throats. Don’t be that person who, the only thing they have to say to you is “buy my stuff.” I’ve seen people like that and it’s annoying. I think let your product stand for itself. Post snippets on a blog, such as Six Sentence Sunday, or give out a free story, but otherwise, the biggest advice I’ve learned is to be supportive of other people and show your readers who you are. Get them interested in you. I couldn’t tell you if it’s working yet, but I am making more friends this way.

Do you have another book in the works?

I have three books my agent and I are preparing to send out to publishers. One is longer single title, called Love’s Healing Touch. A retired army vet and a retirement home nurse must learn to trust each other for the sake of their son. This one’s got a bit of a dark side, as both the hero and the heroine have dark pasts that come into play in the story.
I also have a small, two book series. Book one is Staking His Claim. As I mentioned, I’m revising this one. I’ve decided to twist the beginning a bit from the original version. Book two involves the sister of the hero from book one. Both books revolve around the Morgan family, and hold a theme of taking a chance on love.

What do you like to do in your free time, besides read and write of course?

Honestly? hehe. I play computer games. So all those facebook games? I love those. And games like Diner Dash. Anything to keep my hands and my mind busy. Also watching movies and playing with our two puppies.

Where do you dream of going on vacation?

Hawaii!! And anywhere tropical, with water that’s blue and pretty and has lots of sand. And sun. Somewhere where the sun shines almost all the time. Where I live, in Seattle, it’s gray skies for 9 months out of the year. lol

Boxers or Briefs?

I prefer boxer briefs.

Cookies or cake?

cookies.

Pizza or hamburger?

Hamburger. Though really I could eat either. lol

Beer, Wine, or mixed drink?

Mixed drink

(Hero/Heroine Character Questions)

What were your first impressions of each other?

Alex: She’s beautiful, with eyes I can’t forget. She’s a dancer, and she has moves that make me forget my name, but she’s sassy and self-assured. She also holds her own and I find it sexy as hell. But it’s all an act. Every once in a while she let down her guard, shows me another side of her, something softer and more honest. I was intrigued. I had to know her.

Angela:  He didn’t know when we first met, but he’s my brother’s best friend. We grew up together. I’ve had a crush on him for almost forever. I thought I’d gotten over that until he showed up in the audience one night. Maturity looks good on him.

What’s your favorite characteristic of each other?

Alex:  Her huge heart. She takes care of the people she loves, and she takes care of me. She gives me a place to come home to.

Angela: His openness. He’s very honest with me, about who he is, about what he wants. He gives me all of himself, the broken parts included. It’s completely disarming.

What are your plans for the near future?

Alex: Babies. lots of ‘em. ;)

Angela: blushes

Alex: Seriously? Enjoying my family. Life’s too short to waste a single moment. I learned the hard way that it could all end tomorrow. So I intend to immerse myself in them for as long as I’ve got them.

Krystal Shannan Features - Demons in Disguise by Diane Thorne - Give@way

Demons in Disguise
Playful Demons 2

Heather is attracted to her two coworkers, Chris and Nick. Their toned bodies, charm, and flirtations deepen her desire for them. Overwhelmed with lust, she jokingly states she’d sell her soul to be with them. When they ask her out on a date, she wonders if they have more than a friendly interest in her.
Anthony and Dominick are two sex-hungry demons who enjoy bringing innocents to Hell. They particularly love to collect and play with women.
They respond to Heather's call, and disguised as her two coworkers, they fulfill her wildest fantasies.
Chris and Nick admit they want to explore a relationship with her. Heather considers it until they deny having sex with her the night before. Anthony and Dom show up later and reveal the truth. In a strange turn of events, she will have to decide if she wants an eternity filled with playful sex in Hell, or a chance with two men who care for her.

Anthony had heard the call first. He and Dom had been drinking at The Morning After bar in
Hell when Heather had said those sweet words every demon loves to hear. He slammed his glass
on the counter, grabbed Dom, and teleported both of them to Heather’s desk. They stood behind
her, invisible to all, watching and listening to her talk to her friend and the two men she wanted
to take to her bed. Other demons had popped in, but as soon as they saw Dom and Anthony, they
vanished. With the decreased amount of new demons arriving, word had to be spreading that
Anthony had claimed this innocent.
“This is an easy one. She just wants sex with two men,” Dominick said.
“Can you fucking believe it? She gave up her soul for a ménage a trois. What is it with women
today?”
“Perhaps the better question is what’s wrong with the men?”
Anthony chuckled at his longtime friend. “True. The men are nothing like us. They don’t tie their
women up, spank them, play with their pussies, or fuck them in every position possible. They
don’t make them scream.”
“Because they’re not real men. From what I’ve seen, men today hump their women once and
then fall asleep. I’m not surprised we’re getting such easy jobs. These females are horny as the
devil himself.”
“It’s sad, Dom. Such beautiful women are missing out.”
“It is. But just think, we can give women what they want and then bring them to Hell where
they’ll have to serve us. More workers. More slaves. More freebies. It’s a win-win situation.”
A grin spread across Anthony’s face at the thought of so many women in Hell. Yes, they would
greatly perk up the place. For the last couple of years, the atmosphere down south had been dull.
Few humans had sold their souls, which forced many establishments to shut down or reduce
operating hours. Over the centuries, it was common to go through a dry spell for a while. Then
business would pick up. In the last few months, the tide had shifted some and more souls
populated Hell. Soon, businesses could flourish.
“How close are you to retirement?” Dom asked.
Anthony shook his head, and his sandy-blond strands fell forward over his shoulders. “I don’t
know. I don’t track my points.”
Each soul delivered meant a demon earned points, which counted toward retirement. Anthony
cared little about the point system. And unlike Dom, he lacked motivation to be a slave driver.
Sure, Anthony took pride in his job and delivered plenty of souls to Hell. But he simply wanted
to enjoy women—taste them, bite them, fuck them senseless, and hear them scream. If he had a
flaw, it was his craving for women. Sometimes he’d pass on jobs if a man had called. And if a
freebie occupied Anthony’s time during an innocent’s call, he had no problem waiting for the
next one. And there would be another at some point. Until then, he’d enjoy his time with the
female beauties in his grasp.
“You planning to work forever?” Dom asked.
“If it means more women to fuck in the flesh, hell yes. Freebies are nice, but there’s nothing like
fresh, living pussy.”
Dom slapped his hand on Anthony’s back. “You’re a fine man and demon. Your cock always
seems to find the best women. I’m glad you’re my friend.”
“It’s a dirty job which I’m proud to do for eternity.”
“I’m sure you are.” Dom chuckled. “Have you considered how to consummate the deal?”
“Yes, I’ve already devised a plan.” Anthony stiffened. “I will need your help. Let’s have a few
drinks and discuss it. I’m confident word has spread one of us has claimed this innocent.”
“Sounds good to me.”
Anthony placed his hand on Dom’s shoulder. Together, they teleported to Damnation Alley in
Hell. Demons chatting and laughing walked along the street. Music from one of the clubs
attracted a line of demons and damned souls. Another mass crowded in front of the theatre where
Little Nicky, The Serpent and the Rainbow, and several hard-core porno movies were playing.
“I’m glad to see they changed the movie selections,” Anthony said as they went around the
waiting crowd.
“I ran into Alicia not too long ago, and she wanted to see a comedy. It appears she got her wish.”
“I don’t mind the X-rated movies, personally. They never bore me.”
Anthony slowed as they passed a new sex-toy shop. The clear glass door showed sexy clothes
hanging from walls and toys on rack displays. Young men and women with packaged items in
their hands waited to check out.
The Italian quickened his pace to catch up with Dom. “I’m glad to see we have new businesses.”
“Better days are coming, without any doubt.”

Krystal Shannan Interviews - Jerrie Alexander - The Green-Eyed Doll - Give@way

Please help me welcome Jerrie Alexander to the blog today! I'm super excited to hear about her new release.

Krystal! Thank you for inviting me to hang out with you and your readers today. I appreciate the opportunity.

So glad to have you, Jerrie. Tell us a little about yourself.
A student of  creative writing in her youth, Jerrie set aside her passion when life presented her with a John Wayne husband, and two wonderful children.  A career in logistics offered her the opportunity to travel to many beautiful locations in America, and she revisits them in her romantic suspense novels.

But the characters went with her, talked to her, and insisted she share their dark, sexy stories with others.  She writes alpha males and kick-ass women who weave their way through death and fear to emerge stronger because of, and on occasion in spite of, their love for each other.  She likes to torture people, make them suffer, and if they’re strong enough, they live happily ever after.

Jerrie lives in Texas, loves sunshine, children’s laughter, sugar (human and granulated), and researching for her heroes and heroines.

Did you always want to be an author? What made you choose to write romance?
I discovered journalism back in high school, but the more I wrote, the more I wanted to embellish the story, which of course wasn't allowed. So I switched to creative writing. Life and work took me on a different path for a while, but writing was never far away.

I'll share a secret with you. I still have the stories I turned in for grades. They moved with us from Texas, to California, Arkansas, Georgia and back to Texas. No one will ever see them but they are that important to me.

What is your favorite part of being a writer/author?
Entertaining people. Nothing pleases me more than taking them out of their everyday life and into a world of danger, love, and suspense.

When a reader finishes one of my books, I hope they feel as if they personally knew the characters, that they loved the conflicts and romance. If that happens with every book, then I'll have achieved my goal!

Tell us a little about your book. What inspired you to write it?
Research! I was studying FBI profiler files on serial killers, looking at the different triggers or events that cause a person to snap. In the middle of a discussion on what I'd read and the direction I'd picked, my daughter named the book.

BLURB:

Catherine McCoy is running from her past. She's been on the move for a year, hiding the secret and guilt in her heart. When she lands in small-town Texas and meets Sheriff Matt Ballard, he ignites a flame she thought lost forever.

Matt has scars of his own. He left the big city after an undercover operation went bad and his partner was killed. Now, as Matt hunts for a serial killer who paints his victims like porcelain dolls, Catherine becomes a safe haven for him. Two tortured souls finding comfort in each other's arms—until he uncovers her secret, and their bond of trust is broken.

When Catherine disappears, Matt races to find her, fearing the murderer has found his next green-eyed doll. But the killer has a surprise coming. Catherine will fight to the death before she'll be a victim. But will her determination be enough?

Here's a sneak peek at THE GREEN-EYED DOLL!

Catherine paced and argued with herself. Should she stay or go home? She’d told Matt he’d need a friend after the first woman went missing and now this. She couldn’t imagine the pressure he must be under. Her plan was to have a hot supper waiting for him. She’d basted and basted until the roast withered and fell apart. The once firm potatoes? Mush. The gravy was a light brown paste.
Benedict Arnold stood and trotted to the back door before Catherine heard Matt’s pickup. The dog was glad to know Matt was home, too. She leaned back against the kitchen counter and waited.
“Hey.” A lame greeting, but seeing him stunned her speechless.
Dark circles and cold, weary, blue eyes marred his Michelangelo face. His black hair fell in disarray and looked like he’d raked his fingers through a number of times today. His chiseled jaw and chin were dark with a long day’s stubble. With a couple of long strides, he pinned her between him and the counter. He framed her face with his hands, closed his eyes, and lowered his forehead to hers. They stood in silence for a long time, unmoving, their bodies not touching. Fear for the missing woman radiated off him.
His anguish, more than she’d planned for, hit her hard. His dedication and concern, traits she admired, shook her conviction that no man could be trusted. His tenderness, something she’d never had, touched a long-neglected place in her soul.

Do you plot and outline or do you just write?  Plotter or Pantser?
Plot? I can hear my critique partner if she reads this. She'll roll around on the floor laughing. She's worked diligently and demonstrated an amazing amount of patience to teach me to plot. I know how, just can't make myself. I do a full blown character profile on and the players before I start writing. I get to know them in depth, point them toward a disaster and let them take over. I guess you could call me a plotster.

Can you tell us about the process of getting your first book published?
Can you say rejection? They're not fun but for me it was part of the learning process. I didn't keep them, but I tried to learn from each one. I rewrote, tweaked, and rewrote some more until I got it right.

What advice would you give new authors? What have you learned about the business?
First thing that came to mind was to never give up on your dream, but I have to add research. Know what you want to write. What makes you happy? I tried straight contemporary at first, but that genre wasn't a good fit for me. I love romantic suspense and things started to click when I swapped genres.

This business is tough, and requires hard work. You have to keep writing, and writing, and writing!

SO TRUE! Don't ever let the stories stop :-)

Do you have another book in the works?
I do! THE LAST EXECUTION is waiting release. And HELL or HIGH WATER, the first book in the LOST and FOUND, Inc. series is waiting for a release date. They may have dates by this time.

My current work in process, His to Lose, is the second book in the series.

What do you like to do in your free time, besides read and write of course?
I love to hang out with family and friends. I paint a little and love to bake. There's usually a cake, or brownies, or pie in my kitchen.

Where do you dream of going on vacation?
Anywhere the ocean is clear, the water is warm, and the snorkeling is stellar. Australia is a long flight but snorkeling the Great Barrier Reef would make the trip worth every minute.

Boxers or Briefs? Briefs
Cookies or cake? I have to choose? Okay...cake
Pizza or hamburger? Pizza
Beer, Wine, or mixed drink? If I can't have coffee, bring me a bloody mary. :)

(Hero/Heroine Character Questions)
What were your first impressions of each other?
Catherine McCoy: The last thing I need was to be pulled over by a nosey sheriff who I thought was going to give me a ticket for an illegal u-turn. I mean, really? No way could I spare that kind of money. Behind his aviator sunglasses was a gorgeous pair if blue eyes that apparently saw my predicament. He gave me a warning.
Sheriff Matt Ballard: First impression? Hmm...for a routine stop, I thought she was a bit too nervous. She damn near knocked me down with her car door. She broke my sunglasses and blinded me with her wildfire red hair and green eyes.

What’s your favorite characteristic of each other?
Catherine: His honesty and truthfulness. He's dedicated to defend and protect those who can't protect themselves.
Matt: She's the most determined, hardheaded woman I've met. She refuses help of any kind. It's frustrating sometimes, but I respect her desire to be self-sufficient.

What are your plans for the near future?
I hope to have, SOMEONE to WATCH OVER ME, a short story sold soon. And finishing HIS to LOSE is a priority. Plus we're celebrating the release of THE GREEN-EYED DOLL!

Jerrie will be awarding a $10 Amazon or Barnes and Noble GC to a randomly drawn commenter at the end of each week, and a $20 Amazon or Barnes and Noble GC to one randomly drawn commenter from all comments during the tour, awarded at the end of the tour. Krystal Shannan Interviews - Nicole MacDonald - THE ARRIVAL

Please welcome the fabulous Nicole MacDonald to the blog today!

Tell us a little about yourself.

I am a 30yr old New Zealander who loves to daydream and read. On a whim I decided to start a little story, thinking no one would ever read it and that has turned into a trilogy of 100k+ word novels and far more readers than I ever imagined. Reading was once my obsession, now it’s creating the worlds I love to daydream about, with kick-ass female leads!

Did you always want to be an author? What made you choose to write romance?

No, I never intended to write a book, let alone three. The thought of it terrified me. And then, when I finally did write a book it took me months to admit that it had a rather strong romantic streak running through it!

What is your favorite part of being a writer/author?

Writing the books I want to read.

Tell us a little about your book. What inspired you to write it?

My book was inspired by my friends and my partner. It’s a fun, straight up and curiously realistic fantasy that I wanted to be as ‘believable’ as possible but with all the fantastical creatures I’ve loved since childhood.

Four friends in the midst of a man drought cast a love spell on a whim, unexpectedly landing them on another planet.

Oops.

On a foreign and often hostile world, love teeters on the horizon while the threat of civil war looms thanks to the girls' surprising gifts. Will the girls master these gifts in time to survive a war in which not only are they the ultimate weapons, but also the ultimate prize?

“ The branches we used to make the shelter stunk. I wasn’t sure yet if it was a good smell or a bad smell, just distractingly pungent. The shelter was a pretty basic design but it kept the wind out and might keep us dry.
It was just that smell.
Maybe it isn’t just the branches, I thought, it might be my pillow.
Sighing, I sat up to try and fix it again. Scrunching the leaves into a better shape, I re-fixed the hood of my cloak over them and lay down.
Sleep came quickly and it must have been around midnight when Audi’s soft growl woke me.
What? What was she growling about? Blinking, I peered around. The moon was full, making it surprisingly light in the shelter. I whispered her name and Audi crept to my side then gave another low growl. Placing a hand on her back I was shocked to feel the fur erect, like when we’d been chased by the elgrids.
Oh God, what now?
It couldn’t be anything little, considering Audi hadn’t raced out of the shelter to scare it off. Audrey wasn't a chicken, but she was sensible. With trembling hands, I knelt and strapped on the sword and daggers. The shuffling outside had gotten closer. My stomach seemed to sink to my feet and a wave of dizziness hit as fear swept through me.
Not again, I thought, the village is half a day’s walk away. There was no way we would be able to make it back.
I crawled over to Kassie and shook her, placing a hand over her mouth. She mumbled, then her eyes flashed open in shock.
'Shhh, something’s outside and Audi thinks it’s bad. Strap your sword on and get ready.'

Do you plot and outline or do you just write?  Plotter or Pantser?

I plot and outline. Plot the major points and outline the slower parts so to make sure that the story flows well.

Can you tell us about the process of getting your first book published?

I self-published on Amazon and Smashwords. It’s a full on process that requires an awful lot of time and dedication. As a hobby, writing is VERY time consuming.

What advice would you give new authors?  What have you learned about the business?

The one star reviews ALWAYS sting at first. However, after a few months you learn to only take heart from those who enjoy your work, because in the long run you write for those who love your world, not those who don’t.

Do you have another book in the works?
I’m working on the final book in the trilogy, Feel the Burn, which will be available in December.

What do you like to do in your free time, besides read and write of course?

Sword fighting, tramping, sewing, reading, watch movies and spend time with my loved ones (critters included).

Where do you dream of going on vacation?

Japan.

Boxers or Briefs? Briefs.

Cookies or cake? Ooooo… Cake – as long as it’s layered with excessive frosting.

Pizza or hamburger? Pizza.

Beer, Wine, or mixed drink? Ummm… I’m actually allergic to alcohol, so I’ll go with lemon water *grin*

Wow! Bummer :-(

(Hero/Heroine Character Questions)
What were your first impressions of each other?
Cat – Tall, dark, and handsome. Owns a bloody big griffon that looked like it wanted to eat my dog.
Alek – red head, a tad ditzy. Nice dog.

What’s your favorite characteristic of each other?
Cat – stands his ground calmly. The way he laughs at his own jokes and never makes me feel anything but special.
Alek – her passion, honesty and absolute tenacity. The way you can read everything she thinks on her face.

What are your plans for the near future?

I have the basic outlines for a couple of series and a standalone black comedy, so hopefully to convert those ideas into novels.

Nicole will be awarding a $50.00 gift card – Amazon or Barnes & Noble, winners choice, to a randomly drawn commenter during the tour. Be sure to leave your email and a comment to enter and visit the other stops along the way as well!

Krystal Shannan Interviews - Elizabeth Finn - Devil's Pawn

Please help me welcome Elizabeth Finn to the blog today!

Without further ado.... tell us a little about yourself.

I’m a full time Human Resources Specialist at a rather large company. I have a son, and I’m also a Junior in a business management program, thanks in large part to nice tuition assistance through my employer… Oh yeah, I find time to write too!

Did you always want to be an author?

Not really. I was always better than average with my writing, and with every compliment from a teacher, professor, work associate, that desire to write more built slowly.

What is your favorite part of being a writer/author?

The freedom to create the exact story you want to hear. I may watch a movie or read a book, but my mind always takes the characters down a different path than the author or writer – even if only subtle plot changes, and there is nothing better or worse about my angle than their own. Writing just gives you the option to completely make the story your own. That’s a very powerful feeling in my opinion.

What book have you most recently released?

The Devil’s Pawn released on 9/17/2012, and Brother’s Keeper released 10/22/2012… They’re pretty close together, and I’m equally excited to be sharing both! I also have Restoring Jordan releasing on 12/17/2012.

What was your favorite part of the book?

Oh gosh, let’s just focus on The Devil’s Pawn. The very first sexual encounter of Derek and Ashton and the “morning after.” Derek is a reluctant hero at best, and he really put her through hell to begin with, but there are subtle moments where his compassion show through his cold hard exterior, and it is seeing that in the midst of Ashton’s fear and pain and absolute trepidation that just get under my skin.

Tell us a little about your book.

I have a few upcoming releases, but the release that is available right now is The Devil’s Pawn. Here goes!

When Ashton is left orphaned after her parents are murdered, her life becomes a hell she could never have imagined. Left to fend for herself, and responsible for a debt she doesn’t owe, she is swept into a life as a gentleman’s escort at a private men’s gaming hall. Her new manager makes it abundantly clear he doesn’t appreciate her inexperience, innocence, and shyness. On the contrary, he despises everything about her.
Derek can be “difficult,” she’s been told. And however dark and handsome he may be, he terrifies her in a way that chills her to the bone, but leaves her begging to understand him. As they are pulled along together, more secrets and threats than either one could ever conceive are revealed, and a common enemy emerges. This enemy will stop at nothing to bring Derek to his knees while using Ashton as the greatest pawn in his torturous game.
Will Derek be able to let down his shield of cold, harsh emotion before it’s too late? Will he be able to sacrifice himself to save Ashton, or will they both be destroyed by the secrets of their pasts?

Once in the fitting room, Derek takes the chair again while I start to remove my clothes. I intentionally wore ugly, stretched-out, white cotton underwear that is entirely too big on me in the event he should be here. My mouth isn’t the only thing that can get me into trouble—my sarcasm knows no bounds when I’m unhappy.
As he sees the appalling excuse for an undergarment, his eyes move up to mine, narrowing darkly at my obvious defiance. I look coolly back at him before looking away dismissively. My anger and resentment of him from the humiliation he subjected me to the previous morning, not to mention his treatment of me over the past two weeks, have charged me into a bold, fiery bitch that no longer cares what retribution I might face. While my tongue usually gets me in trouble, today I decided to let my underwear do the talking.
Jacob enters with an armful of dresses for me to try on, and he cringes as he takes in my defiant granny panties, hated the world over by men, including, apparently, gay men.
He turns to Derek, and with a scrunched-up face, he worries out loud. “The dresses aren’t going to lay right over those…” He tosses a nod in my general direction.
Derek wastes no time at all reassuring Jacob and striking back at me. “No worries. Ashton was just taking them off. She won’t be wearing underwear anymore.”
I glare defiantly back at him as I drop the loose fabric to the floor. He returns the glare for a moment before letting his gaze travel down my body to my sex, and as it lands there, smoldering with heat, I turn abruptly from him, intentionally showing him my backside instead. I look to the mirror in front of me, and I catch his eyes flit away from me in annoyance. He worries his lip with his thumb and index finger as he contemplates, and the slightest of smirks crosses over his mouth. Jacob is standing by looking from one to the other of us, obviously wondering just exactly what he’s gotten himself in the middle of.
Derek finally looks back to Jacob. “Get on with it.”
I try on one after the other of the dresses. Some are perfect; Jacob pins in additional alterations in others. Derek sits by bored, only glancing up from his cell phone occasionally. One such occasion is when Jacob remarks that I’m “just not curvy enough for this one.”
Derek looks up to Jacob, but he shifts his eyes to mine before commenting, “Yes, well, if you can figure out some way of making her look female, you let me know.”
Jacob again lets his eyes pass between us, seeming to wonder all the while what he’s missing. As I hold Derek’s eyes with my own, my anger falters, and the pain that is behind my fury pushes through. I try to wrangle my tears into submission, but it’s no use. In defeat, first one, and then another spills from my eyes and slides down my cheeks. Jacob regards my state and excuses himself from the room.
I stand on the hemming block in the center of the room, refusing to look at Derek. But he’s looking at me, and as my hurt continues to work through my entire body, I let my tongue do what it does best. “Why do you hate me so much?”
He says nothing, but stands and moves to me. Reaching around behind me, he pulls the zipper of the dress down, and then, returning his hands to my shoulders, he pulls the straps down, exposing first my small breasts, and then the rest of my naked body as it falls to the floor.
He leans in to my ear and speaks. “You don’t know anything about me.” He then takes me by the hand and pulls me to stand in front of the mirror, and leaning to my ear once more as I watch him in the mirror, he speaks gently. “Lean forward and put your palms on the mirror.”

When did you start writing and when did you finish your first book?

Hah! I actually started writing my upcoming release, Brother’s Keeper, five year ago. I got about a third of the way through, and that was it. I put it away, buried it, started a family, went back to school, you name it. I did everything but finish it. This past summer, after finally pushing myself to get back in to writing, I finished my first manuscript, The Devil’s Pawn, and I decided to dust off Brother’s Keeper and see if there was anything that still spoke to me about it. I fell in love with the characters all over again, ended up finishing it, subbing it after The Devil’s Pawn was contracted, and it will now be coming out on October 22, 2012!

Where do you get your inspiration?

No idea. Truly, I’d likely need a shrink to answer that one. I’ve invented and developed stories in my head for as long as I can remember, and frankly, I was shocked with I found out that everyone else in the world did not do the same thing! The stories are just floating around all the time, waiting to be written. They’re my sanctuary, they’re how I de-stress and sometimes how I compensate and cope with the shortcomings of life. But where does the actual plot come from, I’m clueless.

Do you plot and outline or do you just write?  Plotter or Pantser?

Plotter to a degree. I have a general idea of how the story will play out, but it is very loose on the details. I may not go in knowing what the black moment will be, but I know the general conflicts and flow.

Can you tell us a little about the process of getting your first book published?

Truthfully, far easier than I imagined. I love working with Liquid Silver Books, and I have found confidence, and knowledge and just the nudge needed to push me in the right direction more than I can tell you from LSB. The run down: I submitted, I received a response in less than two weeks, I worked through a few quick revisions, was assigned an editor and cover artist, moved on to the final line editor after the content edits were done, and now it’s done! It was work, but it was not as overwhelming as you might think.

Rate your story in terms steaminess?
Hmmm. It’s steamy. It broke some rules, had the editor saying “I’m not sure you can do that… I’m going to check with the publisher…” So yeah, steamy… super heated steam. But also grounded in very realistic gritty life. It’s not gratuitous for the sake of being gratuitous – there’s a very emotionally compelling story beneath the steam.

Do you have another book in the works?
As I mentioned, I have Brother’s Keeper releasing on 10/22/2012, and that will be followed by Restoring Jordan on 12/17/2012.

What advice would you give new authors?  What have you learned about the business?
Just try it. Don’t get discouraged. Just write for the sake of writing and nothing else. Listen to feedback from editors and people in the industry, but don’t stop writing. Writing can be daunting. You look at this story and you wonder, how the heck am I gonna capture that whole story, but you just don’t realize that you can do it until you put fingers to keys and go for it. And there is no better feeling than finalizing a manuscript and hitting the send key as you send it off to the publisher.

Boxers or Briefs?
Boxer briefs all the way. There is no one or the other – they struck pay-dirt when they invented the boxer brief.

Pizza or hamburger?
Pizza… but only in moderation… darn carbs.

Beer, Wine, or mixed drink?
Wine, and not just wine, Chianti. I love Chianti.

If you could spend a week anywhere in the world, where would it be?  Would you write or read there, or do something else?
A secluded cabin in the mountains. Any mountains. I would be alone, the weather would be oh…. Sixty degrees; it would be foggy and/or overcast, and I would write. There would have to be a spider free porch and a comfortable chair with a footrest, so my laptop and I could do our thing.

(Character Questions)
What were your first impressions of each other?
Derek – I hated her innocence, her shyness. She looks nothing like a prostitute, and now I’m responsible for her. In truth, I hate that she makes me worry about her. Life is easier when you don’t have to worry or care about anyone but yourself. Damn her for disrupting my life.
Ashton – I was terrified of him. He was beautiful, but his eyes showed his loathing for me. Everything about this new life was terrifying, and he was no exception … but he was so incredibly beautiful—just harsh, cruel, and God how he hates me.

What’s your favorite characteristic of each other?
Derek – As much as I want to push her away, my hands want to touch her curls. They’re wild and crazy curls that cascade long down her back and leave my hands wanting to twine and twist their way through her hair.
Ashton – his eyes. They’re intense and penetrating. His every emotion, the ones he fights so hard to hide, are seen in the dark depths of his eyes so clearly.

Krystal Shannan Interviews - Robin Danner - THE PRINCES BOUND

Please help me welcome Robin Danner to the blog! So excited to have you here today...

Tell us a little about yourself.

Hi, Krystal! Thanks for having me here!

It's my pleasure to have you!

I’m Robin Danner and I write sweet and sexy historicals. I live in Alabama with my husband and three sons. When I’m not writing, I enjoy watching reality television and singing karaoke … quite possibly off-key!

I am a graduate of Troy University and published my first novel not long after earning a degree in Biology. I work full-time and shuffle my time between writing, work, and my family. Readers can find out more about me at http://robindanner.webs.com

Did you always want to be an author? What made you choose to write romance?

I’ve always loved to write, but I did not seriously consider becoming a published author until my last year of college. I’ve been writing romance for my own entertainment (and later on, for my cousins) since I was a pre-teen. I had all sorts of stories that I wrote in composition notebooks and kept hidden from everyone. Romance is pretty much the only genre I read, so I naturally veered toward it with my own writing.

What is your favorite part of being a writer/author?

My favorite part is bringing characters to life on the page! One of the most awesome feelings in the world is rereading your own book(s) and thinking “Did I seriously write this?” It’s so much fun to fall in love with your characters all over again.

Tell us a little about your book. What inspired you to write it?

The Princes Bound is the first book in my new historical series. I set out to write it shortly after the birth of my first son. The title actually came to me first. Bound and Determined was the direction I was going, so I ended up with The Princes Bound and The Princes Determined

The Princes Bound deals with the romance between Nadia, a female soldier in the Noventian army, and Mathis, the prince of Isidor.  When Mathis refuses to attend the wedding of his brother, Talin, Nadia is sent to abduct him and bring him to Noventia.

Prince Talin’s trusted captain, Nadia, is ordered to abduct his brother, Prince Mathis of Isidor, and bring him to the wedding of Talin and the daughter of their family’s sworn enemy. Loyalties are tested and enemies gather as Mathis and Nadia’s inescapable attraction threatens to bind the pair together.

Nadia waited for his swim to come to an end. When it did, she was ready. As his bare feet stepped onto the mossy bank, she leaped from her hiding spot and tackled him to the ground. She pressed the point of her dagger to a prominent vein in his neck.
At first, he appeared shocked by her attack. When he realized she was a woman, he let out a hearty laugh.
“What sort of seduction is this? Tell me, sweet lady, did Trevor put you up to this?”
His voice was silky smooth, but a hard edge underlined the words. She could tell he didn’t like being bested; it was apparent by the firm way he held his jaw.
“I’m afraid I don’t know any Trevor. Now do as you’re told, Your Highness, and you won’t be harmed.”
His beautiful eyes narrowed in warning. “I am the prince of this realm, and I order you to sheathe your weapon at once.”
“I’m afraid I can’t do that.”
His damp skin soaked through her clothing, and she repressed a shiver at the chill. She was a soldier, and a soldier couldn’t afford to show weakness.
The prince moved under her, and she was nearly jostled to the ground. She tightened her grip on the dagger and pressed it sharply to his neck. “Careful, Prince. We wouldn’t want to spill any royal blood today. I promise you, as long as you follow my command, you will remain safe.”
His body went lax, but his eyes continued to flash with unconcealed anger. “Who sent you?”
It was too early to reveal all, so she attempted to change the subject. “A fairer question would be what is a prince doing out at night without his guard?”
Although he had to know he was trapped, his chin lifted a notch. “My kingdom is a peaceful one.”
His composure was commendable.
Nadia glanced over her shoulder to instruct the recruit. “Stefan, fetch his Highness’ clothing and be quick about it.”

LOVE IT!

Do you plot and outline or do you just write?  Plotter or Pantser?

Total pantser, right here! Sometimes I may have a general idea of where I want a book to go, but ninety percent of the time I just sit at my computer and start typing. I figure it out as I go. It’s amazing the good ideas that come to you when you don’t tie yourself to an outline.

With my Princes series, it ended up nothing like I thought it would when I set out to write out. My husband gave me valuable input and I ended up writing the third book, The Princes Knighted, as a result. I have plans for a fourth and fifth book, but if I hadn’t bounces ideas off my husband, this series would have ended with two books.

Can you tell us about the process of getting your first book published?

It was a long, winding road! I got a contract right out of college, but then the owner of the company got sick and had to close. By then, I was e-published with another company and I sent my first book to them. That company ended up going bankrupt! Apparently my first book is cursed. I’m scared to try and rerelease it!

What advice would you give new authors?  What have you learned about the business?

The best way to fight writer’s block is to just end the scene and begin a fresh one. I finally learned this for myself when I started writing again in May. It’s helped me so much! I used to stare for hours at a scene, without adding a single word. Now if I get stuck, I just end the scene and keep going. I can always go back and flesh out the scene later.

As for the business, I’m still learning everyday! I feel I’ve become a better writer with every book I publish, but there are so many things I don’t know yet. For example, promotion is a side I know next-to-nothing about.

Do you have another book in the works?

I have several! The Princes Determined is coming to Liquid Silver on Nov 19, 2012 and The Princes Knighted follows on Jan 7, 2013. Stroke of Midnight, a short historical paranormal, is coming to Etopia Press in December 2012.

I’m working on the fourth Princes book as we speak!

What do you like to do in your free time, besides read and write of course?

I don’t have much free time, but I love karaoke and watching reality television. My favorite shows are American Idol, So You Think You Can Dance, and The X Factor. As you can probably tell, music plays a huge part of my life!

Whenever I can, I like to go play blackjack. I haven’t been in over a year though.

Where do you dream of going on vacation?

Santorini, Greece! The only problem is I’m scared of flying!

I hate to tell you.... it would be a really long drive and an even longer boat ride. LOL.

Boxers or Briefs?

This is hilarious…I ask the same exact question with every interview I conduct! And mine is the standard answer, boxer briefs!

Cookies or cake?

I am not a cake person at all, so cookies for me! But I prefer cream cheese brownies. They’re my weakness.

Pizza or hamburger?

Oooh, a toughie! I like both! But I will have to choose cheeseburgers (Don’t hand me a burger without cheese on it. Hehehehe.)

Beer, Wine, or mixed drink?

Now which category would shots of tequila fit in? ; )

(Hero/Heroine Character Questions)
What were your first impressions of each other?
Mathis is not favorably impressed with Nadia at first, which is quite understandable considering she abducts him. Nadia is immediately attracted to him, but her dedication and loyalty refuses to let her admit it.
What’s your favorite characteristic of each other?
I love that Mathis is a scholar. Nadia’s determination is my favorite characteristic.

What are your plans for the near future?

Hopefully continue writing and releasing books!
