Krystal Shannan Interviews - Jenna Jaxon

Jenna
Jaxon

Tell us a little about yourself.
I’m a professor of theatre who is also a romance novelist.  I like drama all the time. J  I live with my family on the eastern coast of Virginia, very beautiful country, and we share our home with a strange menagerie of pets.

Did you always want to be an author?
I don’t think I did consciously, or I’d have been an English major concentrating on creative writing.  I always wanted to be a teacher, mostly of history.  Then I got into theatre and when that bug bit me, I was a goner.  So now I have the best of all worlds--I teach theatre (including theatre history) and I write historical novels.  Who could ask for more?

What is your favorite part of being a writer/author?
Creating my own worlds and making the characters do what I want them to (most of the time).  I guess that means I most like to play God. LOL

Tell us a little about your book.
7 Days of Seduction is an erotic romance novella about a woman who parties too hardy one Friday night and wakes up to find she’s had a ménage a trois with her ex-boyfriend and a gorgeous stranger.  When the stranger shows back up--in her shower no less--he convinces her to let him help her explore her sexuality through a series of “colorful” adventures.  After seven days they will celebrate with one more adventure that promises to push her boundaries to the breaking point--if she can agree to it.

7 Days of Seduction:
Ashley Thompson had a wild time at her party last Friday night. Maybe too wild. She wakes to find a video of her in the middle of a ménage a trois with her ex-boyfriend and a gorgeous stranger. Unable to remember anything about the night, other than the hot sex she sees on the computer screen, Ashley begins a search for Mr. Hunk. She has no luck until he unexpectedly shows up–in her shower.
Hunter Hopewell intends to introduce Ash to a variety of sexual experiences he finds fun and exciting. He proposes a week long series of “colorful” encounters designed to seduce Ashley out of her kink comfort zone.
As their week of escalating pleasure intensifies, Ashley must choose to let go of her inhibitions or risk losing the best damn lover she’s ever had.
Excerpt:

The bathroom door opened and closed. Her hands froze.
"Damn it, Sam. Why is it every time I take a shower you have to pee? Couldn't you just hold it for once? Or pee in a cup, for God's sake?"
"I'm not Sam. And I don't have to pee."
Ashley's eyes popped open and the bottle of body wash hit the tub with a loud thunk. The husky voice she'd heard on yesterday's video and in this morning's dream was richer in person. Sexier. Her heart took off like a deer after a shotgun blast. She peered at the shower door, seeing only a shadowy figure through the opaque glass. Well thank, God, for that. He couldn't see her either.
"Hello? Are you there, Ash?" The amusement in his tone brought her back to earth.
"Yeah, I'm here. And just who the hell are you?"
"I'm Hunter Hopewell. Sorry we didn't really get introduced the other night."
"No shit." Damn. The all-important name meant nothing. The spray from the shower roared in her ears and Ashley took a step toward the shower door.
"So who are you? I mean, you say Hunter Hopewell, but I don't know you. And you know me."
"Yes, I do. I've never met you, but I've been interested in you for a while now."
Despite the hot water, chills raced over her body, standing her hair on end. Oh, my God. A stalker. I've attracted a stalkerAnd I'm shut in a bathroom with him. Suddenly, she couldn't breathe.
"You work over in English at the university." He knew where she worked. "And I've seen you around the campus." He'd been watching her.
She wrapped her arms around her chest, shielding her body as best she could. Maybe Sam would come in.
"You're a beautiful girl, Ashley. With lots of potential."
Potential for what? Needing to breathe or pass out, she gasped in air.
"I think you should leave." Where the balls came from to utter that sentence, she had no idea.
"Why?" His voice rose an octave.
"Because you're scaring the crap out of me."

When did you start writing and when did you finish your first book?
I started writing with an eye to publication almost exactly four years ago.  I started my first historical in January of 2009 and finished it on July 31--all 187K words of it.

Where do you get your inspiration?
A lot of my inspiration comes from music--songs I hear on the radio that beg me to flesh out their stories.  7 Days of Seduction is one such, inspired by Katy Perry’s “Last Friday Night.”

Do you plot and outline or do you just write? Plotter or Pantser?
Plotter all the way.  I can’t start a project without writing out a detailed outline.  I can vary from the outline, but I have to have it done in order to start writing.

Can you tell us a little about the process of getting your first book published?
My very first story published was actually not a very dramatic tale.  I’d written it for a contest at a conference whose restriction was that the story be no more than 2500 words. Afterwards I sent it to a publisher, Books To Go Now that took short fiction, and they accepted it.  I only wish they were all that easy.  Getting my first full length novel, Only Scandal Will Do, was quite a different story. I queried and got rejected 40+ times.  Twice I was asked to revise and resubmit (that really gets your hopes up, let me tell you) and then ultimately rejected. So I queried and revised for about a year and a half, until Lyrical Press offered me a contract.

What book have you most recently released?
7 Days of Seduction was released in October from New Dawning International Bookfair.

What was your favorite part of the book?
I think my favorite part was the chapter with the wax and cold play.  Ashley’s reactions to all of Hunter’s adventures were fun to write.

Rate your story in terms steaminess?
Think the steam pipe that blew in New York several years ago.  Definitely steamy.

Do you have another book in the works?
I’ve got three historicals I’m working on right now.  Only Marriage Will Do, the book that comes after Only Scandal Will Do, is out to beta readers; my Victorian novel, As Long As You’re Mine, is in revisions and will be sent out to agents in January; and a series of three medieval novellas that form one cohesive book, Time Enough to Love.  The first novella, Betrothal, I hope to self-publish by the end of January.

What advice would you give new authors? What have you learned about the
business?
The best advice I can give new authors is to just keep writing.  No matter what.  The first thing very good friend, Judi McCoy, told me was “You can fix crap.  You can’t fix nothing.”

What I’ve learned about the business is that you cannot stop.  You must continue writing, reading, promoting constantly in order to keep your name out in front of the public.

Boxers or Briefs?  Boxers
Pizza or hamburger?  Pizza
Beer, Wine, or mixed drink? Bailey’s Irish Cream

If you could spend a week anywhere in the world, where would it be? Would you
write or read there, or do something else?
I’d spend a week in England, going around writing down descriptions of places to use in my historicals.

(Character Questions)
What were your first impressions of each other?
Ashley:  I thought, “Oh, my God. A stalker. I've attracted a stalker. And I'm shut in a bathroom with him.”
Hunter:  I thought, “Ashley is a girl who might just take a risk. Might like a little color in her life.”  And I so wanted to provide that color.

What’s your favorite characteristic of each other?
Ashley:  He’s very forceful.  I just love a take-charge kind of guy.
Hunter:  She’s very willing to try new things.  Well, sometimes she needs a nudge, but she’s game for almost anything.

What are your plans for the near future?
Hunter:  That’s going to depend on Jenna, but I think Ash and I are going to grow together as a couple, explore other avenues other than non-stop sex.
Ashley:  Not that we’re giving that up, though.
Hunter:  No, not at all.  But we’re getting to know one another in other intimate ways.

Demons in Disguise
Playful Demons 2

Heather is attracted to her two coworkers, Chris and Nick. Their toned bodies, charm, and flirtations deepen her desire for them. They respond to Heather's call, and disguised as her two coworkers, they fulfill her wildest fantasies.
Chris and Nick admit they want to explore a relationship with her. Heather considers it until they deny having sex with her the night before. Anthony and Dom show up later and reveal the truth. In a strange turn of events, she will have to decide if she wants an eternity filled with playful sex in Hell, or a chance with two men who care for her.

Excerpt:
Anthony had heard the call first. He and Dom had been drinking at The Morning After bar in
Hell when Heather had said those sweet words every demon loves to hear. He slammed his glass
on the counter, grabbed Dom, and teleported both of them to Heather’s desk. They stood behind
her, invisible to all, watching and listening to her talk to her friend and the two men she wanted
to take to her bed. Other demons had popped in, but as soon as they saw Dom and Anthony, they
vanished. With the decreased amount of new demons arriving, word had to be spreading that
Anthony had claimed this innocent.
“This is an easy one. She just wants sex with two men,” Dominick said.
“Can you fucking believe it? She gave up her soul for a ménage a trois. What is it with women
today?”
“Perhaps the better question is what’s wrong with the men?”
Anthony chuckled at his longtime friend. “True. The men are nothing like us. They don’t tie their
women up, spank them, play with their pussies, or fuck them in every position possible. They
don’t make them scream.”
“Because they’re not real men. From what I’ve seen, men today hump their women once and
then fall asleep. I’m not surprised we’re getting such easy jobs. These females are horny as the
devil himself.”
“It’s sad, Dom. Such beautiful women are missing out.”
“It is. But just think, we can give women what they want and then bring them to Hell where
they’ll have to serve us. More workers. More slaves. More freebies. It’s a win-win situation.”
A grin spread across Anthony’s face at the thought of so many women in Hell. Yes, they would
greatly perk up the place. For the last couple of years, the atmosphere down south had been dull.
Few humans had sold their souls, which forced many establishments to shut down or reduce
operating hours. Over the centuries, it was common to go through a dry spell for a while. Then
business would pick up. In the last few months, the tide had shifted some and more souls
populated Hell. Soon, businesses could flourish.
“How close are you to retirement?” Dom asked.
Anthony shook his head, and his sandy-blond strands fell forward over his shoulders. “I don’t
know. I don’t track my points.”
Each soul delivered meant a demon earned points, which counted toward retirement. Anthony
cared little about the point system. And unlike Dom, he lacked motivation to be a slave driver.
Sure, Anthony took pride in his job and delivered plenty of souls to Hell. But he simply wanted
to enjoy women—taste them, bite them, fuck them senseless, and hear them scream. If he had a
flaw, it was his craving for women. Sometimes he’d pass on jobs if a man had called. And if a
freebie occupied Anthony’s time during an innocent’s call, he had no problem waiting for the
next one. And there would be another at some point. Until then, he’d enjoy his time with the
female beauties in his grasp.
“You planning to work forever?” Dom asked.
“If it means more women to fuck in the flesh, hell yes. Freebies are nice, but there’s nothing like
fresh, living pussy.”
Dom slapped his hand on Anthony’s back. “You’re a fine man and demon. Your cock always
seems to find the best women. I’m glad you’re my friend.”
“It’s a dirty job which I’m proud to do for eternity.”
“I’m sure you are.” Dom chuckled. “Have you considered how to consummate the deal?”
“Yes, I’ve already devised a plan.” Anthony stiffened. “I will need your help. Let’s have a few
drinks and discuss it. I’m confident word has spread one of us has claimed this innocent.”
“Sounds good to me.”
Anthony placed his hand on Dom’s shoulder. Together, they teleported to Damnation Alley in
Hell. Demons chatting and laughing walked along the street. Music from one of the clubs
attracted a line of demons and damned souls. Another mass crowded in front of the theatre where
Little Nicky, The Serpent and the Rainbow, and several hard-core porno movies were playing.
“I’m glad to see they changed the movie selections,” Anthony said as they went around the
waiting crowd.
“I ran into Alicia not too long ago, and she wanted to see a comedy. It appears she got her wish.”
“I don’t mind the X-rated movies, personally. They never bore me.”
Anthony slowed as they passed a new sex-toy shop. The clear glass door showed sexy clothes
hanging from walls and toys on rack displays. Young men and women with packaged items in
their hands waited to check out.
The Italian quickened his pace to catch up with Dom. “I’m glad to see we have new businesses.”
“Better days are coming, without any doubt.”

Blurb:

London and Nick have been friends since college but when Nick moves in with London during renovations to his own apartment, things quickly start to become less than platonic. Just as London is starting to see the upside to this new development, she meets the perfect guy for her, Collin, an artist at the art gallery where she works.

Nick is her best friend, her confidant, the one person on Earth she can just be herself with. But Collin feeds her intellect, her artistic side, her soul.  Once she’s finally tasted each of them, London knows she has to choose, but cannot decide which man she can live without. Luckily Nick and Collin have it all figured out and are determined to show London that two are always better than one.

Tell us a little about yourself.
I grew up in a very small town in Indiana and have always loved to read and write. I now live in Nashville, TN with my husband and kids. I love the outdoors and volunteer with my kids’ scout troops.

Did you always want to be an author? What made you choose to write romance?
What is your favorite part of being a writer/author?
I’ve always written stories and considered myself a writer, but I didn’t get serious about writing until after the birth of my twins when I had four kids under four years of age at home. I needed some mental space of my own and that’s when I started writing with the intent to publish.

Romance was the only choice, really. I’ve read romance since I was in sixth grade or so. I studied literature in college and enjoy reading other types of books but romance is my first love.

The best part about being a writer is being able to just get lost in my own imagination. I love making up characters and settings and writing about their fictional love lives. It’s fun! I also have met a lot of writing friends who understand the quirky nature of writers and just “get” me like no other group of friends really can.

Tell us a little about your book. What inspired you to write it?
“My Favorite Fantasy” is a series of novellas I’m doing. Each is a stand-alone story and explores a different fantasy. My current release, Tripled, is about a girl who is attracted to two very different guys. One is her best friend, the other a sexy stranger she meets in the art gallery here she works. Here’s an excerpt from Tripled:

“That’s it. Hold it.”
He started clicking pictures. “Drop your head just a fraction,” he said and then clicked a few more pictures. “Ok, now try your hand on your hip. Bend your knee slightly to cover your sex from this angle,” he said. Collin was smiling, apparently getting the shots he wanted. “You are a natural. Comfortable being in the nude.”
“I like being naked,” I said and it was the truth. Since Nick had been staying with me I’d had to remember to take a robe to wear after I got out of the shower.
“Thank goddess,” he said, echoing my earlier statement. He clicked pictures until the slip started to dry and crack on my skin and then he walked over to me. His eyes were wild, dark and I knew that now he  had more on his mind than just artistic fervor.
“You’re beautiful.” Collin’s voice was husky, which could only mean good things.
“You said that.” I lowered my arms and dropped the grapes.
“I know. I just can’t believe you’re here and you’ve posed for me and you’re naked.”
Collin used his thumb to tease my bottom lip and I couldn’t resist flicking my tongue out in blatant invitation. “It’s a fantasy come to life.”
“Well come and get it, then.”
He dipped his head and kissed me. Sensation blossomed where our skin met. Warmth spread from my mouth to my breasts and lower to lick at my naked sex.
I snaked a hand through his hair and stepped closer. I wanted to feel his hard body against mine. Its strength, its warmth, everything.
He pulled me close and the sensation of his abs beneath my hands was every bit as good as I thought it would be. “For an artist, you have an amazing body,” I said when I could breathe. “Good enough to paint.”
“Nothing compared to yours,” he said. “I love your curves and the way the light turns your skin almost luminescent.”
I picked up the bucket of slip he’d left next to the shoot and held it up. “Your turn.”

Do you plot and outline or do you just write?  Plotter or Pantser?
I used to consider myself a straight-up plotter, but the more I write the more I make up as I go along. When I get an idea for a story, I sit down and write sort of a rough synopsis of the story and loosely plan out the chapters so that I know the pacing is right for the length of the story I’m planning. But once I start to write, things sometimes change. When I have enough on paper that I begin to “know” my characters, the conflicts can change as well as the major story points. By about 1/3 of the way through, I have a good handle on the story and rewrite my synopsis and outline. I don’t have a lot of writing time so having an outline to remind me where I’m going really helps.

Can you tell us about the process of getting your first book published?
I first sold a novella to Red Sage Publishing for one if their Secrets anthologies of erotic romance. I’d read several of their books, had heard good things about them and decided to pitch my novella at RWA national conference. The pitch went OK and they asked for a partial. I got an email one morning about 2 a.m. offering me a contract and was absolutely thrilled. Of course, who was I going to call at 2 in the morning and squeal with? I had to wait until daybreak to tell my family and friends.

What advice would you give new authors?  What have you learned about the business?
Just do it and keep doing it. You’ll learn more working through the first draft of your first book than you would in 100 writing craft books. The first thing you’ll learn was that it’s a lot harder than you thought it would be! The second is that you’ll love it more that you thought you would. You’re not going to get everything right the first time, so keep at it and you’ll keep improving with each story.

The most important thing I’ve learned, especially with small presses, is to make sure you read and understand your contract. If you don’t know what something means, ask a writing friend or someone from your writing group before you sign. Decide what’s important to you and don’t be afraid to ask for changes to the contract. Even if you have an agent, you should know what you’re signing. There is no one who has a bigger investment in your career than you, so you have to take care of the business side of writing as well as the creative one.

Do you have another book in the works?
Of course! My new release, Tripled, is the second of the “My Favorite Fantasy” series of sexy novellas I’m writing. The third, Exposed, will be available in January.

What do you like to do in your free time, besides read and write of course?
I love the outdoors and spend a lot of time outside hiking, camping and just sitting. I also volunteer with my kids’ scout troops and love movies.

Where do you dream of going on vacation?
Either somewhere in the wilderness, like the wilds of Alaska or somewhere really luxurious where everything is taken care of for you.

Boxers or Briefs? boxers
Cookies or cake? cookies
Pizza or hamburger? Pizza
Beer, Wine, or mixed drink? Mixed drink, but nothing with rum

Krystal Shannan Features - Morticia Knight - Is it Possible to Have a Genuine HEA Menage?

Please help me welcome Morticia Knight to the blog today! She's chatting with us today about Menage! I don't know about you, but I'm on the edge of my seat.

Is it Possible to Have a Genuine HEA Ménage?

I have no idea why I started writing ménage. I still enjoy traditional MF romance, both the reading and the writing. I live quite happily with my husband of six years. So what gives?
I think it might be the vicarious thrill. And definitely the challenge. You have completely different scenarios for a ménage than in a one on one. Ever hear the cliché the third wheel? It would be very easy to leave one of the three out, and for feelings of jealousy and resentment to take over. Not a very fun read for an HEA romance.

So everyone needs to be treated equally in the triangle, plus all three have to feel they are getting what they need and want from the relationship on every level – physically and emotionally. And there are other considerations. How does one meet a potential partner (or two) to have a loving ménage? Sure, there are all types of one night stand scenarios, or sex club scenarios where you can easily and believably have a ménage – but what about everyday working people who want that type of relationship? It’s hard enough to meet one good guy, let alone two!

In my MFM ménage, The Perfect Third, I look at a scenario where a woman is looking for that one good guy, and inadvertently stumbles onto two. Since she is not a party girl at all, and has never even had a casual ménage, she can’t grasp the concept of being with two guys at once in a committed relationship. However, she is so head over heels for the first guy, and the second one is so gorgeous, she wonders…

I’ve included an adult excerpt that is the scene where Alexa initially gets together with the first guy, Lorne.

One woman – two hunky musicians. Will she become their Perfect Third?

He knelt down in front of her and began to kiss her again, and she could feel that her mouth was sloppy and her lips were swollen from the recent assault of his shaft. Her cheeks were flushed, and he watched as her chest rose alluringly with fast breath. He began to explore her again, and he made it clear it was time for the rest of her clothing to come off. He undid her bra, and she helped move things along by sliding her panties off.
“I appreciate your enthusiasm,” he said, locking with her eyes again. “I plan to reward it.”
He pushed her back on the couch, lifted one of her legs up against its back, and positioned the other so that her foot touched the floor. With her splayed before him, he began to caress and rub the inside of her thighs, reaching higher towards her hips, and rubbing her stomach. She leant back on her elbows and moaned. He reached a little higher and cupped both breasts, pinching and rolling her nipples until they were hard.
“Oh, yes,” she whispered. “That feels so good.”
As he continued to work her nipples, he slid closer to her until his mouth reached her inner thighs, where he nipped and licked at the sensitive skin. He alternated licking, love-biting, and brushing his lips back and forth on each side, moving ever closer to the lovely folds between her legs. She was beginning to move slightly under his ministrations, her hips thrusting forward, closer to his busy mouth.
“Oh, Lorne, please,” she begged. “Please…”
“Mmmm…that’s nice, the way you’re asking. I think I should give you your reward…”
Lorne’s tongue thrust deep between her wet pussy lips and soft, trimmed curls and searched for her waiting clit. She cried out in pleasure, and began to buck more insistently beneath his lips. Clearly inspired by her obvious enjoyment, he slicked his tongue around and over her clit, furiously bringing her to a frenzy. Just when it seemed she would lose control, he backed off, and let his tongue go to other parts of her most intimate area.
First he pushed into her vagina, his strong tongue acting like a little cock as it rammed into her. Then he lifted her hips a little more, and his tongue travelled further back, teasing between her back cheeks, searching for her other entrance. He swiped his tongue at the hole a few times, and Alexa responded to every little thing he did with all types of cries of pleasure. Lorne laid her down, and began to move back up to her throbbing clit. This time he furiously wiggled it with his tongue, not letting up for a second. Alexa’s whimpers and cries were becoming stronger and more rhythmic, her hips keeping time with the dance of Lorne’s tongue.
He kept at her until she could hold back no longer. As he grasped her hips tightly, seemingly to control her pleasure, she screamed out in release, Lorne only backing off when she was fully done. He kept his face between her thighs as she panted in the aftermath, kissing the inside of her thighs again and again until she was completely through.
“My God, you taste heavenly,” he said.
With that, he turned her over onto her stomach.
“Are you ready for more?”
“Oh yes, Lorne.” She could barely talk, she was still so aroused. “Do whatever you want; that was fantastic.”
“Whatever I want? Are you sure?”
