Krystal Shannan #SixSunday - WIP - Pride Rules #21

Welcome back for another taste of Eshe and Darren. Be sure to stop by www.sixsunday.com for more fabulous authors.

I barely smell human in your scent at all.”
With a single stride, he was standing nearly on top of her again. His scent flowed around her and she drank it in. It’s soothed her overheated nerves. He wrapped a hand around her hip and slipped the other beneath her damp hair, tilting her head up. His mouth sunk down to meet hers and Eshe shrieked, but it was muffled by his kiss.

Krystal Shannan Spotlights - Sonia Hightower - Sinful Urges

Relaunch Party!!! Sinful Urges by Sonia Hightower

Follow the confessions of Juan and Maria as they fall prey to lust at first sight. Can they stop themselves before it's too late, or will they become victims of their own sinful urges?

A new neighbor sends Juan running to confession to rid himself of the lustful thoughts he experiences. Each confession becomes more erotic, more sinful than the last. Can Juan stop himself, or will he give in to the desire that threatens his very faith?

The man across the street causes Maria to question her own morals. When she seeks out a priest for confession, she weaves a tale of exotic kisses and stolen moments. How can Maria find sanctuary in her prayers when her body demands she finds solace in her neighbor's arms?

Warning: NOT a romance. May contain steamy, first person narrative that makes one uncomfortable, content that will raise your eyebrows, and a tragic ending.
Excerpt:
"I sauntered outside, tossing my black mane, relishing in the feel of the setting sun brandishing my skin, wishing I could replace it with hot hands. I grabbed the hose from where it was connected in front of the house and, watching from the corner of my eye, I began running water over my car. Not even five minutes passed and I felt his eyes on me. It took every ounce of willpower I had not to turn and meet his stare.
"It only took ten minutes for him to come outside under the pretense of playing catch with his little boy. By this point, I was soaked and knew my nipples were visible through my top. The smack of a ball repeatedly hitting a glove was the only background noise I heard as I grabbed a sponge from the soap bucket and scrubbed the roof of my car. I allowed my shorts to climb higher up my buttocks as my hips swayed with my scrubbing movement. I had a very dirty roof. It required me to reach further and further and my breasts squashed against the car windows. I felt my nipples harden under the cold water, but the rest of me, the lower part of me was burning up.
"Still, I refused to turn, refused to allow Juan to see my front.
"Thump went the ball into a glove.
"I maneuvered around my vehicle at a crawling pace, keeping my back to street. I bent over my trunk, reaching for a spot I had missed in the first scrubbing, the sponge clutched so tightly in my hand that it ached, much like the rest of my body.
"Thump went the ball into a glove.
"I finished with that spot and finally turned around, allowing my wet hair to swish and slap my cheek as I braced myself against the trunk, pretending to need my balance on the wet driveway. My eyes were closed, and I tilted my head back to catch the last of the sun's rays on my face, the front end of me dripping wet. The inside of my shorts were even wetter.
"Crash went the ball into a car window.
"I smiled as I realized I had obtained my goal. Juan was mine...

Fabulous Author Friday ~ Elysa Hendricks

Please help me welcome Elysa Hendricks to the blog today! So excited to have her back with us sharing about her new book!

Without further ado......

Tell us a little about yourself.

Well, I've been writing for over twenty years, which means I must have started when I was about five? Yep, that's about right, since once I hit thirty I started deducting a year from my age every other birthday. Then again, I'm not so good at math. Well, anyways, I've been writing for a long time and creating stories in my head for even longer.

Besides being an author I'm a wife of many, many, many years - more than the twenty I've been writing. I'm the mother of two wonderful young men. Actually, according to my math (counting on my fingers and toes) they're older than I am.

Did you always want to be an author?

I've always been a storyteller, spinning tales in my mind, but I didn't actually think about writing an actual book until the Christmas Eve my sister-in-law passed away. My husband and nine-year old son took my mother-in-law and went to Arizona for the funeral, leaving me home alone with our younger son. After putting him to bed I sat down to write what I thought would be a short contemporary romance. Strangely enough it turned out to be about a winged telepathic alien who stows away aboard a passing space craft. At that point I realized I wanted to write stories set in different worlds.

What is your favorite part of being a writer/author?

Being able to play God with my characters and their worlds. Unfortunately, it turns out all my characters are atheists.

Tell us a little about your book.

In THE SWORD AND THE PEN when his fictional creation, warrior woman Serilda  appears in his living room, Brandon Davis, an author of sword and sorcery novels, discovers that his characters are atheists too.

THE SWORD AND THE PEN was inspired by a combination of things - the Keenan Wynn Twilight Zone episode A World Of His Own, the TV show Xena The Warrior Princess and the movie Stranger Than Fiction. If your fantasy became reality, what would you do?

Oooooo... sounds fun!

What was your favorite part of the book?

I think the scene where poor Brandon finds himself surrounded by the things he fears most - women and small furry animals.

Rate your story in terms steaminess?

Probably comes in at about 7 out of 10 on the steaminess scale. There are several explicit love scenes. I'd rate it PG-13.

Amazon Link:

If your fantasy became reality, what would you do?

It was time. After penning ten popular sword-and-sorcery novels, Brandon Alexander Davis was ready to move on. Ready to stop hiding in his fictional world. Ready to start living a real life. There was just one problem: as he plotted the noble death of Serilda D'Lar, his fictional creation, complete with mile-long sword, skimpy leather outfit and badass attitude, appeared in his study.

Was she nothing more than a crazy fan, or had Brandon finally cracked?

This warrior woman whom he knew so well, so strong yet vulnerable, was both fantasy and reality. She was an invitation to rediscover all he once knew--that life is an incredible, magical journey and, for love, any man can be a hero.

Excerpt:

"Yeeek!"

At first Brandon thought the shriek was an electronic whine that came from his computer. Panic threatened. When was the last time he'd backed up his files? It had been during that bad electrical storm three months ago when he'd almost lost everything, the same time his writing troubles began. Fortunately the freak power surge from a lightning strike only fried his monitor; his CPU hadn't been harmed. He should have learned from the experience, but writer's block had driven him past rational thought. The idea of losing what little work he'd managed to accomplish these last few weeks made him choke in fear. He scrambled to hit Save.

"Hell, no! Roark doesn't deserve a chance to defend himself. And even if he did, I'm not stupid enough to give him the opportunity to skewer me. That's something Donoval the Honorable would do."

At the sound of the familiar yet condemning voice behind him, Brandon whirled. He slipped off his chair and landed hard on his tailbone. Pain shot up his spine and blurred his vision.

"What?  How did you get in here? And who the hell are you?" He stared up at the woman and gulped. The sword in her hand pointed straight at his heart.

"You know damned well who I am."

The woman didn't sound happy-- and didn't look sane. She loomed over him. Her attire, a short, tight leather skirt, a leather bra, and knee-high boots left a lot of skin exposed to his view. The smell of leather, fresh air and warm woman teased his nostrils.

"What are you?" She poked him in the arm with the tip of her sword.

"Ow!" He scooted back, nearly under his desk.

"Warrior? Priest? Sorcerer?" She crouched down to rest on her heels, and stared at him. The position put her full breasts nearly in his face. "Definitely not a warrior." She pinched his arm. "You have muscle, but not enough to wield a sword in battle. No courage, either. Priest? Unlikely. They don't fear the sword. Only their god makes them cower.  Wizard? Perhaps, but not one of any power, or else I'd be at your feet. So…you're the wizard's assistant most likely." As if satisfied with her conclusion, she rose to her feet.

"Get up. I'll not harm you. I wish to speak to your master. He and I have business to discuss."

Brandon eyed the woman warily. Though her speech and clothing were odd, she sounded and looked extremely familiar. Why? Was she a crazy fan he'd somehow communicated with before?

To be honest, she bore a striking resemblance to Serilda, if shorter. She was five feet seven or eight inches, rather than six feet, and she was less buxom and had softer features than the character he'd ultimately developed. Actually, this woman was more like how he'd envisioned Serilda originally, when he'd introduced her in Donoval's second book: an extremely feminine woman forced to survive in a harsh world by denying her nature. Hillary had convinced him that in her own books Serilda needed to be stronger and have more sex appeal, hence the height and the bigger chest. The change hadn't sat well with him, but the public-- men and women-- loved her, and the books had hit all the bestseller lists. As a result, he had a thriving series, a pending movie deal and cash in his once empty bank account. Success was hard to argue with.

Despite the trampy clothing and hard scowl, she was attractive. Short reddish blonde curls framed an elfin face. Dark lashes fringed large, cat-like green eyes. Sun-kissed skin covered high cheekbones, and her lips, though currently set in a hard line, were full and red.

"I said get up!" She grabbed his arm and hauled him to his feet.

He was surprised that, when he stood, he topped her by a good six inches and probably outweighed her by sixty pounds. That size difference gave him a bit of confidence, but the nasty-looking sword she held with such self-assurance negated it. One could never trust the actions of a crazy person.

"Who are you?" She looked him up and down then seemed to dismiss him.

He pulled himself to his full height and stared down at her. "Brandon Alexander Davis. This is my home."

Unimpressed, she laughed. "Brandon? What kind of name is that? Bran is what I eat to ease my bowels."

Heat crept up Brandon's neck. Being compared to a laxative made him angry, which helped push fear away. "Who the hell are you? And what are you doing here in that ridiculous costume?"

"Who I am and" -- she paused, and two spots of color stained her cheeks-- "what I wear is a matter I will discuss with your master. Where is he? Has he run to hide from me? It will do him no good. I'm determined to find him and solve this."

"I don't have a master. I live here alone." Damn! Why had he told her that? He eased back from the lunatic toward the phone. Could he hit speed dial for 911 before she skewered him? Then what? Even if he succeeded, it would take the police a good fifteen to twenty minutes to reach his isolated home. Could he wrest the sword away from her before then?

His size would be an advantage, but even standing at ease, the woman radiated strength and skill. The odds seemed against him. To win he'd have to hit her-- hard-- and he doubted he could bring himself to do so. The lessons of chivalry his grandmother had taught were too deeply ingrained. In that way, he and Donoval were of one mind. No matter how greatly provoked, men didn't hit women.

Although, the thought of wrestling with this woman was appealing.

"No master? Do not lie to me." The lunatic's fingers flexed around the hilt of her sword.
"Why would I lie?" he snapped. "It's obvious your beef is with someone else. If I knew who and where he was, why would I protect him?"

"Because you're a coward. A powerful sorcerer inspires fear if not loyalty in his minions. But you should fear me more than him," she warned.

"There is no him! I'm the only one here. And I'm not a coward." Being called one triggered something inside him. Having phobias about crowds, insects and small furry animals didn't make him a coward. Not really.

She gave him a thoughtful look. "Is it possible? Are you the one?"

"The one what?"

She ignored his question and studied him. Her intense perusal made him squirm.
"Why didn't I see the resemblance?" she murmured.

"What resemblance?" He didn't like the turn of this conversation. Come to think of it, he hadn't liked the original direction, either.

"To Donoval. You are him-- in form at least." A bit of fear crossed her features, though anger quickly erased it. "I'm loath to believe it, but you are the wizard. Did you construct me so you could play God in my world? Does it give you pleasure to toy with me?"

"What the hell are you talking about? Play God? I'm just a writer trying to make a living. I write stories for people to read and enjoy. It's just entertainment."

LOVE the excerpt!

When did you start writing and when did you finish your first book?

I started writing that Christmas Eve and finished the first draft of that book three months later. Of course, then I spent the next three years learning how to write. That first book now resides under my bed guarded by killer dust bunnies. During those three years I wrote two western historical romances - THIS HEART FOR HIRE and HER WILD TEXAS HEART. Both of them are now available as ebooks.

Where do you get your inspiration?

Oh, I just send my muse to go pick ideas off the idea tree in my backyard. Actually, my inspirations come from everywhere - the news, books, movies, TV, conversation overheard in the grocery store checkout lane - everything I see, hear, taste, touch and smell triggers the What If response in my imagination.

I love the idea tree!

Do you plot and outline or do you just write?  Plotter or Pantser?

I used to say I was only a Pantser, but have realized that while I might not rigidly plot or outline my stories before I start writing them, once I've started I have to sit back and figure out where things are going before I can finish. So while I start off writing into the mist at some point I have to stop and check my GPS.

Can you tell us a little about the process of getting your first book published?

I sold my first book, a western historical romance called RAWHIDE SURRENDER (now available as THIS HEART FOR HIRE) to one of the first ebook publishing houses Hard Shell Word Factory. The process involved submitting my manuscript via email, which back in 1998 was revolutionary. The offer came via email as well. No first call for me.

Do you have another book in the works?

Right now I'm working on a contemporary adventure romance. TANGO IN PARADISE is set during a revolution in a small South American country. The heroine is an idealistic school teacher, the hero a jaded mercenary.

I'm also working on several other projects: another sci-fi adventure romance in my Star Chronicle series and a series of romances featuring a matchmaking cat.

A friend and I have also written a humorous mainstream fiction book together. GRANNIES AND TRANNIES: VEGAS OR BUST is The Golden Girls meets The Bird Cage on a wild, wacky and heartfelt road trip to Las Vegas to rescue a friend from the Mob. We're shopping it around to agents.

What advice would you give new authors?  What have you learned about the business?

As far as advice - read, a lot! And write even more. Finish a book. Submit to publishers. And while you're waiting to hear write another book and another and another. The best and only way to learn the art and craft of writing is to write.

What I've learned is that I don't know what I don't know. Right now the whole of publishing is changing so fast it feels like a roller coaster ride and no one knows where it'll end up. But I think this is one of the best times to be an author.  The opportunities are there. You just have to reach out and grab them.

Boxers or Briefs?
For me or for my hero?
For me - white cotton, granny panties.
My hero - Commando. (Easier access)

ROFL!

Pizza or hamburger?
Definitely a hamburger or better yet a juicy rare steak.

Beer, Wine, or mixed drink?
Mixed drink - frozen Marguerita

If you could spend a week anywhere in the world, where would it be?  Would you write or read there, or do something else?

On a tropical beach with cute cabana boys bringing me my frozen Margueritas and shrimp cocktails. I'd keep busy with a bit of swimming, napping, some writing and reading, as well as a whole lot of other stuff.

(Character Questions)
What were your first impressions of each other?
Brandon: She nearly scared the life out of me, but at the same time I never felt more alive.
Seri: Well, at first look I found him to be a bit of a coward, but first impressions can be deceiving. When the time came Brandon has more courage and strength than any man I've ever known.

What’s your favorite characteristic of each other?
Seri: I love his sense of humor. He makes me laugh at the most inappropriate times.
Brandon: Seri is the strongest, most courageous person I've ever met. She's taught me how to live life rather than just endure it.

What are your plans for the near future?
Seri: Learn how to be a woman in Brandon's world rather than a warrior.
Brandon: Make sure Seri never regrets she gave up her world for mine.

Tricks to Control Pace - Scene and Structure #9

This has been a hectic week for me. Getting ready to go back to work and teacher staff development..... if you've ever taught, I don't need to say more, LOL. If you haven't, well it usually consists of lots of sitting and listening to rules and procedures. Usually stuff you've heard every year for years! Occasionally they will throw in something new or fun, but it's rare.

It has been hard for my daughter to adjust back into a daycare schedule. We were so spoiled sleeping in during the summer. I miss her knocking on my door in the morning and snuggling in bed until we were ready to get up and greet the day.

But I digress.... You really wanted to know the tricks didn't you. Hold on to your britches, LOL. I'm getting there!

Have you ever read or been writing a book and felt like your eyes barely crept across the page? Where the pace of the book nearly had you ready to roll your eyes and toss the kindle on the bed and take a nap?

What do you do when your manuscript is moving the speed of snail slime? I usually have a fight break out *giggle* or my favorite thing to do (my critique partner would tell you) is have the heroine kidnapped! I seriously enjoy a good kidnapping. Maybe I'm just a sucker for watching the hero rescue the heroine....

So last week we talked about SEQUELS (The thoughtful, can be extended, have summary in them, and therefore are slow-reading). SCENES are the exciting, conflictful, densely packed with action and dialogue, and therefore fast-reading.

Techniques to Speed the Story

  1. Check your WIP for places where a sequel connects two logically progressing scenes. You might be able to eliminate the sequel completely and just let the two scenes butt up against each other.
  2. Check for places where maybe you don't need an introspective sequel, but maybe just a "Three hours later...."  or "In Chicago, at the downtown Hilton...." Short, sweet, to the point and a lightning-fast transition to the next scene.
  3. *WARNING* Don't use the same kind of transition twice in a row.
  4. If you find yourself with a really long introspective sequel, ask yourself if everything is necessary. Does your character really have to recount everything we just experienced over the last ten pages.... *yawn* Sometimes it works! But a lot of time it just pulls the parking break on the pace of your WIP.
  5. Did you summarize a scene into a sequel that could have been really exciting if you'd written it out? Go back and write it in to help build more momentum.
  6. Look at all your scenes and decide if there's anything extra you can add to raise the stakes.
  7. Check your timing. Maybe you gave your hero too long to react to the disaster. Perhaps you can move up the timeline and create new action right away.

Pacing is usually a constant worry for most writers. If your problem isn't slow pace, just do the opposite of the above tips -add sequels, lengthen sequels, cut down scenes, or eliminate them and summarize into a sequel, give your character breathing room, lengthen timeline...etc.

"...in my experience of teaching fiction technique in the university classroom for more than two decades, novice novels that fail because they move too slowly outnumber those that move too fast by a margin of about 10 to 1." - SCENE AND STRUCTURE
Jack goes further and explains what he considers the most obvious reasons.
1) Many beginning writers unconsciously shy away from presenting conflict just as they shy away from conflict in real life. Few of us like the emotional discomfort of a nasty fight in real life, and there is a danger that we might try to dodge conflict in our fiction, too, for the sake of "comfort."
2) Many beginners focus on the interior life of the character's thoughts or feelings, failing to understand the reader's yearning for outside action of some kind, played onstage in the story "now."
3) Most beginners start out with little concept of how many plot events (scenes) it takes to construct a story of 60K or more and then try to up the word count by padding it with sequels.
4) Writing scen conflict is hard, both in terms of handling the terse writing style involved and in terms of the emotional fatigue such writing brings upon its creator.
5) Too many beginners want to be "poetic" or "philosophical," so they write overblown sequels to wax rhapsodic about character emotion, or bombard us with their profound ideas.

Happy Reading

Welcome back for another glimpse at Eshe and Darren. Remember to stop by www.sixsunday.com for more links!

Car keys slipped from her hand and hit the carpet with a soft thud. The big purse was next. She pushed the bag against the wall with her foot. It caught in the strap and she fell forward as she tried to shake her leg free.
His arms were around her in a second. She face-planted into the center of his chest.

Fabulous Author Friday ~ Heather Long

Please help me welcome Heather Long to the blog today! Can't wait to hear all about her new release.

Without further ado......

Tell us a little about yourself.

I’m a mother, a pet owner and a student of life. I studied journalism, psychology and business in school and I have degrees in two out of three of those subjects. I write because I can’t not write and every book is a passionate love affair for me and every time I type “the end” it’s a bittersweet moment.

Did you always want to be an author?

I’ve been writing for as long as I can remember. I’ve always loved books and I was always telling my own version of stories. Initially I wanted to write comic books, DC Comics specifically and I even pitched to an editor in New York and developed a potential working relationship. Alas, that came to naught, so I continued on, but I never stopped writing. When my daughter was born, I went from having a lot of free time to almost none and that was the last kickstart I needed to finish a full manuscript.

Five years of practicing, writing, re-writing my fiction while working as a freelance writer continued to grow my craft. From 2006 to 2008, it was all about the rejection letter. Then in late 2008, I received my first acceptance and now here I am four years and 18 books later with nearly ten due out total this year. It’s been a wild ride, but I wouldn’t trade any of it. The challenges actually made me a better writer.

WOW! Kuddos!

What is your favorite part of being a writer/author?

Writing is my favorite part about being a writer and I mean that literally. I’ve always loved to read, but writing lets me immerse myself deep in this world that is unfolding while you are writing is just amazing to me.

Tell us a little about your book.

Jacob’s Trial is the second book in the series that began with Cassandra’s Dilemma.  Jacob Book, one of the two men Cassandra is in love with is also a Wizard. In this world, Wizards are the product of liaisons between Fae males and human females. Cassandra’s choice to help the Fae out themselves to the world has changed Jacob’s life. To keep the woman he loves safe, he has to build a true alliance with the Elf Helcyon, and stand against his own kind as they come after Cassie. As much as I enjoyed writing Cassandra’s Dilemma, it was exciting to see this story come to fruition as these three delved deeper into what it their commitment to a triad means.

Blurb:

[Ménage Amour: Erotic Fantasy Ménage a Trois Romance, M/F/M, elves, light bondage, HEA]
New alliances are threatened…
Wizard Jacob, Fae Helcyon, and their paramour Cassandra have set up a household together. Jacob and Helcyon have accepted the other in Cassie's life, but they must work to realize that they need each other too in order to become a true trio.
Dark pacts are revealed…
The Fae are trending worldwide, but the arrival of many dangerous beings, old foes, and new friends bring about charges of treason for Jacob and a new danger for Cassie. Intrigue closes in on all sides as factions jockey for power on the divided Wizard Council.
One legacy may unite them…
Helcyon and Jacob are determined to keep the woman they love safe, but danger lurks at every turn and the old ways threaten their future.
A Siren Erotic Romance

STORY EXCERPT

Helcyon’s sword flashed through the air, slicing toward Jacob’s throat only to be caught between his hands. Jacob was both a Homeland Security Agent and Wizard. A vibrating hum ripped through the room. Cassie stared at them both with wide eyes and an open mouth.
“Are you out of your mind?” They were currently occupying the mansion’s solarium. Morning sunshine poured in the broad windows, warming every surface.
“No,” Jacob said slowly, giving a push with his hands to send the blade back to the Elf. “You need to learn to defend yourself.”
Cassie pointed a long painted nail first at Jacob and then at Helcyon. “No.”
“Cassandra.” Helcyon’s voice carried the patience of the ages, his stance relaxed. “The Wizard is correct. Self-defense is vital to your survival.”
“And I’m still not learning how to use a sword.” She wrinkled her nose at both of them, nibbled on a cruller, and pointedly returned her attention to the digital tablet in her lap. In the week since their announcement went live on every major news network, the shit had literally hit the fan about the Fae. Appointment calls poured in from late-night television, daytime television, newspapers, and Congress. She’d expected them all, even the calls from congressional leaders. She simply hadn’t imagined they’d come all at once.
“Cassie.” Jacob stalked toward her, and she barely managed to wrap her fingers around the tablet before he tried to tug it away. “This is important.”
“Yes.” She yanked the tablet back to her chest, wrapping her arms securely around it. “It is important. I don’t have an assistant to field these calls. I need to review every single one.”
Her heart spasmed on the word “assistant.” Billy had been dead for two weeks.
Two.
It seemed impossible that in less than two weeks she’d gone from footloose media consultant to coveted Fae-human liaison. More impossible that she’d gone from overworked professional woman to up to her eyeballs with two of the most gorgeous and loving men she’d ever met. Well, when they weren’t arguing. She glared up at Jacob, meeting his hot, demanding stare with steel.
Typically she wore contacts to cover up her previously green, now supernaturally colored eyes. A byproduct of a blinding spell, her men wanted the hue disguised whenever she was in public. They cited safety, security, and simplicity. It wasn’t a point she felt the need to argue. At home, she skipped the contacts, so she knew he was staring into her gold eyes the same way she watched the gold flecks in his liquid brown eyes warm to flinty points. Behind him, Helcyon sighed.
The sound dragged her attention to the Elf. He and Jacob were so alike and yet so wildly different. Helcyon was the dark to Jacob’s light in looks. Silky, midnight-black hair poured down his back, and warm, mysterious forest-green eyes softened whenever his gaze touched her face.
Her heart squeezed. They were amazing. Both of them.
“Dammit, Cassie.” Jacob’s fist came down on the arm of the chair, and she pursed her lips, bracing for the argument that always erupted when she fought back against the total obedience he demanded. She understood his need to protect her, a need that just seemed to escalate after they captured Michael. He was still pissed that the Glashtyn, the Fae vehicle he traveled in, chose to aid her and demonstrated remarkable affection toward her. Affection she used to run away from the warring pair just a week earlier.
Blowing out a breath, she tilted her head. “Jacob, be reasonable. I need to do my job.”
“This is me being reasonable. I haven’t turned that annoying thing to ash.” He pointed at her tablet. “And your job includes you staying alive, which means you need to increase your knowledge of self-defense.”
“For all those times you two plan on leaving me alone?” She pretended to ignore Helcyon’s faint smile. The Elf was so much more patient than Jacob, but in the hours before the press conference, they’d informed her that they were willing to stay with her…both of them. A thought that sent heat skittering through her blood and thrummed pleasure against every pulse point.
No one fell in love in seven days, and she’d done it twice. A week later, she knew she loved them, every stubborn, argumentative inch. They both wanted her to choose, but they were willing to share her body, her heart, and her defense.
The defense part was getting on her nerves.

What was your favorite part of the book?

Jacob’s Trial had a lot of great moments for me, I think my favorite is when the guys have to watch Jude teach Cassie how to shield herself. The camaraderie between the two was very visceral and seeing Cassie stand up for herself was a heck of a lot fun. She was a hard heroine in some ways because she wasn’t a kickass heroine who could hold her own in a fight--she was brilliant and talented, but she actually needed protection and they needed her to be able to last those four or five precious seconds it could take for them to get to her.

Rate your story in terms steaminess?

Siren gave it a sextreme rating which is pretty racy, I think I pushed some of my own personal limits with this one, and again with the third book which is due out later this month.

Heather has gifted us with two excerpts and I'm using both! I love excerpts and this second one is SMOK'IN! The second excerpt is rated *adult* and is at the bottom of the post.

When did you start writing and when did you finish your first book?

My very first book was written at the age of 9, and it took me about a week to write. I’ve gotten more complex, but I’m still pretty fast.

Where do you get your inspiration?

I get my inspiration everywhere. It can be a line of dialogue in a television show, a joke shared between friends or just something I see while driving my car. Everything has a meaning to me and everything has a story.

Do you plot and outline or do you just write?  Plotter or Pantser?

I’ve done both and these days I’m somewhere in between. I always have a rough outline in mind when I start, I know the major events that have to happen and then I let the story unfold - sometimes that means deviating from the original plan, but eventually it works out.

Can you tell us a little about the process of getting your first book published?

My very first book published was actually a novella. I’d written it years ago, played with it, tweaked it and submitted it. When I received the offer letter to publish it, I had a mini panic attack.  Funnily enough, that feeling -- hasn’t changed and I’ve gotten the offer letter more than a few times.

What book have you most recently released?

This has been a really busy summer for me. Jacob’s Trial came out in the beginning of June and it was swiftly followed by books four and five in my Always a Marine series and then The Taming of the Thief which is the second book in my Fortunate Buddha series.

Do you have another book in the works?

Always.  I’ve been extremely fortunate this month, I have several releases coming out and I am always hard at work on the next one.

What advice would you give new authors?  What have you learned about the business?

Don’t give up. Ever. Keep writing. All the time. Take classes and learn. But write like you mean it. Write for yourself. For me, writing is a lot like working out, the more you do, the stronger you become.

Boxers or Briefs?  Boxers.

Pizza or hamburger?  Pizza.

Beer, Wine, or mixed drink?  Beer.

If you could spend a week anywhere in the world, where would it be?  Would you write or read there, or do something else?

Mont St. Michel in Normandy, France. I’d like to just experience the area, explore it, take notes and let a story come to life there.

(Character Questions)
What were your first impressions of each other?
Helcyon:  She is a beautiful, enchanting woman. He is a pain in the ass.
Cassandra: Helcyon is fascinating, powerful--compelling. I couldn’t keep my eyes off him. Jacob is stubborn, grumpy and engaging. I couldn’t get my mind off him either.
Jacob:  She’s gorgeous, smart, and far too engaged with the Fae. He’s a pain in the ass.

What’s your favorite characteristic of each other?
Helcyon: She believes in a better way and makes us believe as well.  Jacob’s loyal, steadfast and--trustworthy.
Cassandra:  Helcyon’s lived longer than I can imagine, he’s very forgiving and understanding and patient. Oh my God he’s patient.  Jacob is combustible, a force of nature and so stubborn. He wants his way and he will make you fight to hold onto yourself.
Jacob: Cassandra’s faith in everyone--Fae, human, Wizard--it’s incomparable. She makes me think the world can be a better place.  Helcyon’s--he’s okay for a Fae--fine dammit, he’s better than okay. He’s the only one I trust.

What are your plans for the near future?
Helcyon: Protect Cassandra.
Jacob: Protect Cassandra.
Cassandra: Take care of them and keep building bridges.

I think I see a theme developing! LOL! Thanks for sharing.

Alright everyone. Heather has a question for you.

Could you choose between what you’ve always known for an uncertain future if you loved someone?

Be sure to answer the question and leave your email in a comment for a chance to win a copy of CASSANDRA'S DILEMMA and JACOB'S TRIAL.

ADULT EXCERPT

Her gaze dipped to the silken ropes in his hands. “What are those for?”
“Control.” He circled the bed, drawing the ties across his palms. “Put your hands up to the headboard.”
Her teeth dragged against her lower lip. He hardened at the action. His cock jerked as he recalled the feeling of her mouth wrapping around him, pulling him deep into her throat, and the greedy way she swallowed every drop of seed. Exhaling slowly, he reasserted his control. Her lip biting was her tell. He always knew that her mind worked through the possibilities when she worried that soft, lush lower lip.
He waited, drinking in the shift of her hips and the roll of her bottom against the bed. Excitement beat in her pulse, flooding her body with the fire he longed to bury himself into, stoking that furnace until it consumed them both. But she needed control, and here, in this bedroom, she would learn how to take that power by submitting to the need for it.
Lips pursing, Cassandra raised her arms and pushed her hands against the slats of his headboard. He allowed another smile, this one warm with approval. Moving swiftly, he wrapped the silken ties around her wrists before threading them through the slats. Firm and secure but not tight enough to be painful. Cassandra watched him wordlessly, the tempest of her desire banked against the curiosity he could sense shimmering the air around her.
But she said nothing, and he paused to slant his mouth across hers, a long, wet kiss that invited her tongue to duel. She murmured a groan against his mouth, and Helcyon dragged his lips away, containing the need to devour her.
She growled, and he slid his hands down her sides to pinch her round bottom, enjoying the buck of her hips. “Lesson number one, if you want something, you have to be able to reach for it.”
Her mouth opened, aggravation warring with desire for a foothold in her expression. She tugged her arms, but they remained bound to the headboard. Feathering his hand over her hip, he traced the fine line curving her abandon, barely brushing across the soft, autumn-kissed curls at the juncture of her thighs.
“If I am supposed to reach for it, why did you tie me up?” The words were husky with emotion.
He stroked his hand down her left thigh, exploring the contour of the muscle flexing beneath his caress. “You think your enemies will be fair with you. That they will give you quarter. But why should they?”
Sweeping his hand up the inside of her thigh, he pressed her legs apart, smiling at the dewy flesh and swollen clit. She pushed up against his hands, trying to lift her hips. Feeling how slick it was with need, he grazed his fingertips lightly across the scorching heat of her pussy, never quite touching the soft flesh.
He chuckled at the wordless snarl of demand, combing the curls of her pussy with his thumb, dipping it down to warm the air above her clit but not quite touching it. “Why should they concede to you anything you want if you can’t take it?”
Steeling himself against the throb of blood pulsing through his cock, he stretched out, slanting his body against hers and indulging himself in a long, slow rub along her naked, quivering flesh. Every muscle in her body clenched and his protested the denial, but he watched her fevered expression. Her lips twitched, opening and closing as though she couldn’t find the words.
Her nipples speared against his chest, their turgid points pebbled to such hardness that the rub of his shirt incited them. He nibbled a path along her upraised bicep, enjoying the spicy musk of her want perfuming the air. Bracing his feet he stroked the length of his cock against her pussy. His pants constricted against his cock and his balls drew up, the pain so close to the edge of bliss that it took every ounce of his control to keep him from sinking home into the sexy little furnace.
The whisper of fabric rasped against her and Cassandra thrashed, but he couldn’t quite reach her clit. The barrier of clothing prevented it, and he lavished his attention across her shoulders, circling her breasts and teasing the desperate nipples flushed dark red with need.
“Lesson number two.” The words clogged in his throat, but he pushed them out, fighting the urge to take one perfectly rosy nipple in his mouth to suckle. He longed to slide down her body and suck that hot little clit into his mouth until she came and he could lick her clean and begin again.
But he focused on the lesson at hand. “You must change the rules if you want to take control back.”
“How?” The wail of sound peaked. He could almost feel her heart slamming against her ribs. He turned his head against her, listening to the wild cadence kickboxing inside her chest.
“Remove the barriers you don’t want to be there…focus…take from me what you want.” Fisting his hands into the comforter, he ground himself against her pussy, his cock desperate to be free. Desire threatened to completely shred his control, but he shackled the lust. Cassandra needed him, and if he could walk through fire for her, he could suffer the brutal pinch of his balls’ impending explosion.
YUM! Thanks for sharing, Heather, and thank you so much for being my guest today!

Eshe grumbled under her breath. She did not have time for annoying salesmen today.  She grabbed her purse, slung it over her shoulder, and swung open the front door. “Whatever you’re selling, I’m not–”

One glance at the phenomenal specimen of man standing on her doorstep caused the
words to catch in her throat.

          Delicious!
