Herr Kaismann’s soul-scouring gaze left Blanchette certain the man had memorized her every detail. He showed no regard for Herr Jaeger’s unconcealed aggression, yet an odd compassion in his gaze made her unsure whether or not he would inspire nightmares. Usually in her terrorizing dreams, strangers joined the wolf along the shaded woodland path where the flowers dripped fat drops of blood when she plucked them.

Breaking his stare and shifting his attention to Herr Jaeger, Herr Kaismann said, “I thought the girl was blond.”

“What?” Herr Jaeger asked, incredulous. “What does the color of Blanchette’s hair or your being some--” Herr Jaeger bit off whatever he had originally intended to say and glanced at her as if remembering she still clung to him. “What does any of this have to do with Fraulein Blanchette?”

Herr Kaismann folded his hands neatly before him. “The tales say Little Red Riding Hood was blond, and from everything I have seen, your Blanchette is the true Little Red Riding Hood.”

Herr Jaeger glanced at her, scowled, gray eyes igniting with the comforting protective anger of a man defending his woman. He shifted and turned on Herr Kaismann. “You speak of nothing more than a child’s tale. Do not harass our young women in its name.”

Only, it was true, at least in part. How had the man found her out of all the girls in the Holy Roman Empire? In the world? How had he realized she was the girl to whom the tales referred?

A thin smile turned Herr Kaismann’s lips. He stepped forward so less than a pace remained between the two men. “The emperor and I find the prospect of such simple stories being pure fancy rather…unbelievable. At the heart of every fable or children’s tale lies a grain of truth. In discovering it, we reveal the real danger. We cannot have man-eating wolves running loose, now can we?”

About the Author:

In elementary school, Laura Lee Nutt checked out every fairy tale in the library so often, if she picked something else, it was cause for curiosity. Even into adulthood, she nurtured her imagination with stories of fairies, true love, monsters, especially werewolves, and the fantastic, but she wondered what happened after “happily ever after.”

This curiosity and catching an illness one chill winter day brought her before a blank computer screen, desperately desiring to write something new. Heinrich, Blanchette, and Karl swiftly spun the tale you just read. Laura feverishly typed, barely fast enough to keep up.

Once Red and the Wolf was born, other stories coalesced in Laura’s mind, Beauty and the Beast, Sleeping Beauty, Hansel and Gretel, all asking the same questions: What might happen if the end of these tales wasn’t really the end? What were these characters’ lives really like after the harrowing events of the fairy tale? What if achieving true love and happiness required something extra? The distant sound of running water came from the master of the two-bedroom penthouse suite. Glancing out the arched floor to ceiling windows, she marveled at how even this late at night, there was a sea of people crowding the streets. Distracted and completely absorbed in the view, she never even heard Ascher return and startled when his arms banded around her neck.

His hands smoothed down her sides. “Beautiful, isn’t it?” Enclosing her within the protective confines of his circled arms, his hands splayed across her stomach, bonding them.

As if by instinct, her body obeyed its rhythmic demands, moving fluidly with his. He knew her body—every curve, mark and hollow—and she felt each hard inch of him, even through the boundary of his silky pajama pants. The swaying of their bodies was achingly familiar, the movements mirroring the motions of their lovemaking.

Grasping her hand with his, he led her into the double doors and sweeping archway of the spacious bedroom. More candlelight and flowers accented the decorative cream and white color scheme. The room possessed a surreal sexuality that heightened her awareness of his mood, thus quickening her pulse. She took an exaggerated breath as her lungs struggled to keep pace with her pounding heart.

Four days of worry and mental distance had all but leached the lust from her body, leaving their brutally hot sex life in ruins. The seductive lighting and sight of him gloriously half-dressed coupled with two glasses of Rousseau Red now fueled her hormones, further driving her wild desire for him.

Thanks so much, Krystal, for having me here today to talk about my Sons of Navarus series. From a single character who I began to get emails asking when is he getting his book, it's grown to a series that will add its 7th book this spring.

I get asked all the time, "How did you come up with this series idea?" The answer is simple. Vasilije. I'd written him into a novella that had been a personal reaction to something I was dealing with at the time (writer's catharsis, I guess). He wasn't a huge part of that story, but there was something about him that readers took to. That novella sold so well and so many people asked when they'd be able to read something about him, so I began to write him his own story.

Very quickly, it was much bigger than I'd ever planned. For anyone who's read Blood Avenged, you know Vasilije is a huge character. He takes up all the air in the room, so I guess I wasn't too surprised when he began to demand a series come from his book. (He's very persuasive.) Before long, I had the Sons of Navarus series roughly plotted out and as they say, the rest is history.

I ended up wanting a series that featured a group of heroes readers could fall in love with. Here's a taste of what it's turned out to be:

Eight vampire warriors descended from the gods and chosen to defend their world against the Archon takeover, each dedicated to the war they must win. But there's another side to these Sons of Navarus—one that only the women they love know. Behind the strength they need to defeat their enemies lies a passion different in each one of the Sons. Their war will take them around the world and even involve the gods themselves, but they must unlock the secrets of the Prophecy of Idolas to defeat the Archons or perish in trying for none of their kind can be safe if the Archons win this battle.

Those eight warriors—Vasilije, Saint, Terek, Ramiel, Thane, Sion, Dante, and Nico—have three books behind them already, and Blood Prophecy is the next book in the series and due out this spring. So what can readers expect? Love, action, heartache, dark times, celebration...it's a huge turning point in the series. I know readers are going to love it!

“Damn.” She swirled around looking for help. Across the parking lot and among the small villas scattered about the manicured landscape, elderly couples strolled or walked their dogs. But they were too far away to do more than stare in her direction. The urge to use her powers was pointless, she no longer had them.

“Hey,” she called trying to get the man’s attention as he looked back over his shoulder, eyes wide as he flinched away from something she couldn’t see. If only he would talk to her, she might be able to keep him safe until someone got to him. He had on pajamas, so he must be a patient. She held up her hands. “Hey, back up, stop.”

“Oh, no! Mr. Baker, no!” A woman with short black hair ran from the main entrance of the retirement community, waving her arms.

Both Maeve and the woman screamed as the unfortunate Mr. Baker took a step into the air and hurtled to the ground. He landed in a heap of tangled limbs and bloody splatter on the sidewalk in front of them. The cold presence surrounding Maeve seeped away, leaving her rubbing her arms and puzzled at the sensation.

The exclamation was so deep it sounded more like a lion’s growl than a human voice. Eshe trembled, fear and excitement fluttered across her skin like thousands of butterfly wings. He grasped her waist, lifted her off of his body, and moved from beneath her. Holding her hips, he thrust from behind into her wet pussy and a roar echoed through the room as he seated himself deep inside her.

         Eshe cried out into the sheets. He moved one hand to her shoulder and pulled her upright, pressing her back against his stomach.

The newfound freedom of being on top of his magnificent body was exhilarating. She leaned forward and ran her hands along his taunt muscles. He moaned when her fingertips grazed over his erect nipples. She smiled with satisfaction, to have such power over a man –a male lion at that. He gripped her hips and flexed upward, driving into her body. She gasped and threw back her head.

Sam glanced up at Nicole and then again at Chase. God, he was smiling. A huge lolling sexy grin. Her heart melted into a puddle and all she wanted to do was oblige her wolf, climb into his lap, and snuggle against his broad chest.

Nicole laughed and Sam turned back with a glare. “Out of the entire Vegas strip, soldier-boy hottie ends up one table across from you in your favorite haunt.”

“Shhh… Nicole, don’t talk so loud. He can hear you.” Her cheeks warmed and she took another quick sip of her Jack and coke.

“Ooooh, this is the hottie from the airport?” Hallie giggled.

Sam put her empty glass down and looked up. All three of her sisters were smiling and waving at Chase and his friend. If only she could disappear into the leather of the seat cushion.

“Nicole, wave them over here to our booth. I want to meet the guy that finally made Sam turn her head twice.” Tess snickered. “It’s not every day you get to see Samantha Demakis blush like a high school freshman.”

“Shut up, Tess,” Sam hissed and scowled at her little sister. She wanted nothing more than to talk to Chase again, but not surrounded by her sisters or in front of whoever his friend was. 

Before she could object, Nicole had hopped up from their booth and walked over to the pair. Sam stole another glance and shivered with excitement when both men stood and followed Nicole back to the table.
